The School of Athens
University Commons
(1st Floor)
Begun in 2004 under the direction of Art Professor S. Tucker Cooke, the School of Athens Project includes a large-scale reproduction of Raphael's famous School of Athens (1509-1510) which hangs in the Stanza della Segnatura in the Vatican. Each of the more than 60 panels was painted by dozens of different students, faculty, and members of the community. The UNC Asheville reproduction will be one of only three known public reproductions in the world. At over 1200 sq ft in size, the Asheville version will be more than three times the size of the original (400 sq ft).
The painting was dedicated in 2 ceremonies, honoring Tucker Cooke for his 30-year career at UNCA. Cooke is the longest serving member of the UNC Asheville Faculty. Hired by Chancellor William E. Highsmith, Tucker Cooke has mentored literally thousands of students and led the development of one of the nation's leading undergraduate art programs.
