"A year and a half ago I found myself in a predicament: I wanted to apply
to MFA Creative Writing Programs but had never taken a creative writing class.
Luckily I stumbled upon the Great Smokies Writing Program, which provided me
with invaluable feedback on my writing, membership in a discerning community of
writers, and a much deeper understanding of my craft. Thus armed, this
fall I will happily begin pursuing my MFA."

The Great Smokies
Writing Program is a joint effort between the UNCA departments of Literature and
Language, Creative
Writing and Extension and Distance Education. The program offers opportunities
for writers of all levels to join a
supportive learning community in which their skills and
talents can be explored, practiced, and forged under the careful eye of
professional writers.
The program is
committed to providing the community with affordable university-level classes
led by published writers and experienced teachers. Each course carries academic credit
awarded through UNC Asheville.
The
Writers at Home
reading series during the fall and spring semesters gives local and regional
writers the opportunity to read from their own works to interested participants. The series is free and open to the public and meets on the third Sunday of the
month during fall and spring semesters. Monthly readings are held at
3pm at
Malaprop's Bookstore/Cafe,
55 Haywood Street, Asheville. NC

I would strongly recommend the program to anyone seeking a deeper understanding
of writing. The instructors are talented yet down to earth and willing to
impart their wisdom about writing because they want others to enjoy the beauty
of language and the gift of storytelling."

"The program provides a professional level of instruction that is affordable and
comparable to some of the best MFA programs around. Personally, I have
gained confidence, inspiration, and skills to pursue my writing seriously within
a supportive writing community." Julie Abbott

Through my rediscovered writing I find I am more understanding, more patient
