Will departments farm out fulltime faculty to do an expanded General Education program?
A possible barrier to making changes would be the disjunction between Administration and Department chairs. Enforcement is an issue.
Money is a barrier to making the changes needed.
Grad school training is specialized, which creates a challenge for interdisciplinary teaching and curricular development.
Tenure, promotion, salary needs to reward General Education participation for individuals and departments. Currently there are few incentives for faculty to teach in General Education courses, and few incentives for departments to contribute.
Teaching evaluations are a problem. The evaluations can be lower and faculty may shy away.
There is a general lack of coordination throughout general education.
