2) What works in our current General Education program? (set 4)

Social Science works, apart from those courses which are both General Education courses and introductions to particular majors.

Foreign Language is working, in our perception.  Students are not intimidated by fulfilling this requirement.  Requiring a second year of competence in foreign language would be appropriate, but NOT if it means additional hours.

[Members of this department] were satisfied with the six hours taught in Language 101 and 102.  These courses try to be interdisciplinary, have a well working mix of majors and outsiders, and introduce a good writing foundation.  Exposure to literature is adequately covered in the Humanities sequence in spite of the fact that it is not presented as it would be in a literature class.

The Humanities program received praise.  Its interdisciplinary nature, its organization that allows for self improvements, and the fact that it changes over the years were give as reasons. [Our] majors were better at understanding their own subject because of this program.

Other components of general education that were mentioned in a positive way were: Math, foreign languages,

“Collaborative relationships” and “integrated learning” work in the general education program

Student-librarian contact works; we need to continue with this and even enhance the relationship

[In this listening session,] no specific items were mentioned that seemed to work, although the Humanities program was mentioned in a positive way.  The foreign language requirement, if anything, should be expanded.
