2) What works in our current General Education program? (set 2)
There is nothing obviously wrong, although we might find ways to improve what we do. General education currently serves the major, by bringing students into departments and allowing them to explore, especially in the Social Sciences.
Humanities does a good job of creating a UNCA identity. Students come to recognize a value in what they learn in Humanities; they become better thinkers. The “common struggle” that students in Humanities engage in is a positive experience.
Providing
an historical overview of global culture strong coverage of western thought and
culture.

breadth across curriculum, writing and reading across curriculum, emphasis on
research.
Not completed in freshman and sophomore year. Strength we can build on.
Like the very existence of core requirements. Like inclusion of wide range of disciplines.
Good feedback from majors about Humanities.

Because of the limited number of requirements for [our] majors, the department generally has no issue with the number of hours required for General Education.
The strengths are integrative nature. Students can make sense of material in terms of philosophy, history, art, evidence of cohort.
Issues of professionalization of curriculum tension between shepherding students toward job or encouraging them to follow their passions and interests. Liberal Arts should guarantee freedom to explore not just as a track for a job. Should have enough electives to explore interests
Teaching out of discipline is a kind of modeling for student. Encourages an approach that respects intellectual variety. Incredible richness in it.
