Minutes
1. Presentation to Senate—Dr Katz reviewed his presentation to the Senate. There were a few questions, which were very helpful and positive.
2. Focus groups—Dr Katz will be sending out a schedule of focus groups shortly. He is in the process of scheduling dates and rooms for the events.
3. Presentation to Board of Trustees—Chancellor Mullen has invited Dr Katz to come speak to the UNCA Board of Trustees about General Education on Tuesday, 11 February 2003, at a dinner event.
4. Convergences and Divergences in Proposed Models—Katz had sent out a list of 14 points of contact among the four models presented. In addition, there were 10 areas in which the models diverged. We then discussed points of difference, coming to resolution for the time being on Diversity, Writing Intensive courses, and Foreign Language; there was also considerable agreement on the need for Quantitative Intensive experiences, but disagreement over what that might mean in terms of criteria. It was observed that we might use a faculty forum to get a sense of the criteria the faculty would favor.
5. Timetable—There was an eagerness to bring this Draft Proposal of a revised general education model to a close. We will meet next week to try to come to consensus on the remaining 7 areas of difference among the models. If we do not finish we will hold additional meetings, until we have done. Please send Katz the times you are NOT available to meet during the next week, including evenings and weekends.
