1. Report to the Senate, 9.12.02—Dr Katz reviewed his presentation to the Senate on 9.12.02. He noted that the presentation seemed to be well received. Also, he said that it was going to be critical to maintain close contact with APC throughout the remainder of the design process. Several of the issues that GERTF is considering also have much to do with academic programs and the major. Examples include diversity, writing competency, information literacy and library use, computer competency, among others; each of these may be satisfied in both general education and in the major. Therefore, APC needs to be consulted regularly.
2. Resource Development—Katz also reported briefly on the Charleston NSF Regional Grants Conference, which he was thinking of attending with another team member, in order to learn more about the NSF process, to make contacts, and to see what other institutions are doing. Dr. Padilla suggested that Katz contact Dr. John Stevens, Director of the Office for Sponsored Research, for possible funding. Dr Stevens felt that the program might not be the best use of funds. Instead, Dr Stevens offered to lead a half-day workshop on the NSF grant process and provided two contacts with the NSF, who may be able to offer specific information, when the Design Team is in a position to begin working on a major grant proposal.
3. Continuing work on the Statement of Principles—The Design Team continued working on the Statement of Principles, discussing issues surrounding the appropriate balance of credit hours among the traditional divisions, and among the core-content, distribution, and skills components. The team also worked to prioritize the remaining principle statement issues so that their work would continue to be efficient.
4. Meeting with the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs—Katz will be meeting with Dr Padilla tomorrow, when he will put forward the issues and questions emerging from the work on the Statement of Principles. The emerging issues have to do with faculty participation in general education and reward structures, and with the ratio of transfer students to 4-year admits and its relation to the Articulation Agreement.
5. Next meeting—The next meeting will be Wednesday, 25 September, 4:30-5:30 (5:45?) pm, in KH 207 (the alternative site).
