Statement of Responsibility and Charge for the General Education Review Task ForceExamine UNCA's General Education program in light of the development of students and in the context of the reports from the Chancellor's Task Forces on Diversity, Retention, and Partnerships, from APC on their current review of existing general education courses, and from the Learning Circles on Student Development. This examination includes concisely summarizing current policy and practices in general education, setting goals for the general education curriculum as a whole, and making recommendations for how these goals might best be met. The committee will recommend curricular changes to the Academic Policies Committee of the Faculty Senate. Prepare a progress report on the review to be included in the enhancement portion of UNCA's SACS self-study. Preliminary and final reports should be given to Sherry Gale, the director of the enhancement portion of the self-study, by January 15, 2001 and May 1, 2001, respectively. Because its work will not conclude with the completion of the self-study, the General Education Review Task Force will produce a working document subject to revision. The committee’s main task, within the framework of the self-study, will be to write a set of goals for general education reform. The committee’s reports should be written in four sections: a) a summary of the current program and the charges on which the current program was based, including a brief account of the on-going APC review process, a summarizing statement of the issues covered in the APC review, and copies of completed APC reviews of departments serving the current general education program; b) a mission statement and goals for general education, with rationale; c) preliminary recommendations in light of goals for general education, with rationale, and a timetable for general education reform; d) a statement identifying broadly the kinds of resource allocations and/or structural changes necessary to support general education reform at UNCA.
