"A Celebration of Justice"
Alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends celebrated Homecoming 2011 at UNC Asheville, February 24-27. Festivities included the annual Homecoming parade, tailgating before the basketball games, an alumni art exhibition and a screening of the documentary “Uneven Fairways” with alumnus and Golf Digest Senior Writer Pete McDaniel.
The highlight of the weekend came on Saturday, when basketball players and fans said farewell to the Justice Center, home to Bulldog basketball for 48 seasons. Next season the teams will play at the new Kimmel Arena, a part of the Wilma M. Sherrill Center, which will open in April.
The men’s basketball team defeated Radford, 81-58, to clinch third place in the Big South Conference in front of a sellout crowd. In honor of the their hard work during this game and throughout the season, standout junior guards Matt Dickey and J.P. Primm were named all-conference in balloting by coaches and media members of the Big South Conference on Feb. 28. Dickey was a first-team selection and also was named to the all-academic team. Primm made second-team.
The UNC Asheville Athletics Department honored three former student-athletes on Friday, Feb. 25, inducting them into the UNC Asheville Hall of Fame. The newest members include former basketball player George Gilbert, former women’s soccer player Mackenzie McCoy and current major league baseball player Ty Wigginton.
