The success of FBF's panel

generation. We learned how our panelist's companies moved to the next era of
leadership. Ron Reece, Ph.D., a psychologist from South Carolina, moderated the
program with great enthusiasm. The commonality of family complications
with a bit of humor and love was shared by three companies.

"Current Economic Outlook for NC Family Owned Businesses"
Mr. Jeffrey Kane, Senior Vice
President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond provided the
current economic forecast for our region. As the nation's central bank,
the Federal Reserve sets monetary policy, supervises and regulates member
financial institutions and provides an array of financial services. In the
Fifth District, they contribute to the formulation of national monetary policy,
gather and analyze regional economic data, and supervise and regulate financial
institutions. This was an outstanding opportunity to gaze into the
economic crystal ball for 2008.Mr. Kane was an exceptional speaker and we look
forward to his return.

issues involved in selling a family business. Our presenters were Todd Morse of Chimney
Rock Company, Neil Farnam of Farnam Custom Products, and Colin Larsen who sold
his family business and is now with Colton Groome & Company. We had an
expert panel who added financial and legal advice to members thinking of selling
their business, Bill Smith from First Citizens, Gary Mathes from Dixon Hughes
Accounting and Ken Kaplan of Tatum LLC in Black Mountain. The panel was
moderated by Gerald LeVan of the LeVan Co, LLC.

"Women's Roles in Family Business: Changing the
Face of Family Held Companies"
was presented by Greg Greenleaf and Sharon Krone
of The Family Business Consulting Group, Inc.
While family businesses traditionally have had leadership sustained by male
members of the family, more women are running family businesses than ever
before. When women aspire to leadership roles within the firm as well as
broadened roles within the enterprising family, the opportunities for
business-owning families are greater than ever. The many
traditional and non-traditional roles that women fill in every family business
and what family business members - male and female alike- should be doing
to maximize their performance in these roles was discussed.
Greg earned undergraduate degrees at Skidmore College and a master's in
Counseling Psychology from Lesley College Graduate School. He had a
thriving practice in Boston before making the decision to return to his family
business. Sharon is the Founder of the Family Business Communications
Institute at Loyola University Chicago Family Business Center. She earned
her bachelor's degree from Northwestern University and a master's degree in
Community Counseling at Loyola University Chicago. She has been published
in family business magazines such as "Family Business Review" and "Family
Business Magazine" and has extensive experience giving presentations to family
business groups around the globe.

"Family Dynamics and Family Governance" was presented by Dr. Kelin E. Gersick, co-founder and senior partner of Lansberg,
Gersick & Associates - New Haven, CT.
"What makes a family work? And, how can we make it
work together? Behind most family businesses is a dream of a collaborative
family - supportive, productive, working together effectively and enjoyable.
Owners/ managers, who feel confident in all other aspects of
business, management, strategy, finance and leadership, often find their family
dynamics difficult to understand. Parenting, marriage, family branches,
gender, birth order, in-laws- the organizational aspects of families are the
source of the greatest joy, and the highest anxiety, in family enterprise. Dr.
Gersick used examples and concepts
to help participants look at their own families in new ways.
Gersick is a published author and former editor of the "Family Business Review" and
is the lead author of "Generation to Generation:Life Cycles of the Family
Business." He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and a
B.A. from Yale University.

Dr. Christopher J. Eckrich presented a program
entitled "Working for a Family Business: A Non-Family Employee's Guide to
Success". This event featured two workshops -
one designed for the family members who
are owners and/or employees in the business and the other for non-family
employees - particularly managers and supervisors important to your family
business.
The first workshop addressed issues such as:
-What are the behaviors and policies you can use to keep the rank and file
focused on the family's long term vision and objectives?
- How can we encourage long-term employment without offering equity to
non-family employees?
- Can we competitively recruit the very best and brightest while reserving the
CEO and Chairman positions for family members?
The afternoon workshop touched upon topics such as:
-What makes a family business unique?
-Do family firms have competitive advantages because they are family owned?
-How do I map my career development since I work for a family controlled
company? -What are business-first and family-first business owning families? How do I amass political capital with members of the owning family?
Chris Eckrich is a principal in The Family Business Consulting Group,
Inc. and received the Family Firm Institute's 1994 Outstanding Doctoral
Dissertation Award for his research on family business dynamics.

"Business Continuity and Family Harmony: A Case
Study Approach"

Mr. Wayne Rivers, co-founder and president of
The Family Business Institute of Raleigh, NC and Mr. Fred Hathaway, Jr. was
presented at the Inn on Biltmore Estate. This was a very unique
presentation on an actual family business, including real interviews
with the founder, his daughter, the VP of Sales & Marketing, a son-in-law (the
controller), the non-family operations manager, the wife of the founder,
non-employee child and others, Conflict, control, succession and risk of
accumulated wealth came under discussion.
Mr. Rivers is the
author of two books on the subject of business families.
September 14, 2005 -
UNC Asheville's Reuter Center was the site for
Jennifer M. Pendergast, Ph.D's presentation "The Purpose Driven Family Business
- Planning for the Future of your Business". Dr. Pendergast discussed
strategic processes in the family business, including a family's mission,
vision, values and how to incorporate them. Explored was the
"parallel planning process" involving both the ownership vision and that of the
business itself. A copy of the book "Strategic Planning for the Family
Business: Parallel Planning to Unify the Family and the Business" by John
Ward and Randy Carlock was presented to each attendee. Dr. Pendergast is
with The Family Business Consulting Group, Inc and an
Adjunct Professor at Emory University's Goizueta Business School.

11, 2005 - The Crest Center and Pavilion
hosted Drew
Mendoza, managing principal of The Family Business Consulting Group. Drew's
program "Creating Effective Shareholders"
dealt with skills all shareholders should have, preparing and
educating in-laws, articulating a family's "philosophy" of ownership for their
business, and much more. Members were invited to stay after the program for
a wine tasting hosted by the Biltmore Company. April 26, 2005- Family
Business Forum members had the unique opportunity to attend a luncheon
presentation by the LL Bean Company of Freeport, Maine at
the beautiful Inn on Biltmore Estate. The presenters, Ms. Elizabeth
Spaulding, VP Customer Satisfaction and Ms. Sarah Cox, Senior Manager of Organizational
Development of the LL Bean Company spoke on the topic "Evolving
Company Culture in a Family Owned Business: Balancing Continuity and
Change." They explained how LL Bean began as a one man direct mail order business and
has now become a global outfitting business which involves over 4000 people producing annual
sales of $1.2 billion. They discussed
progression of the LL Bean culture - how values and culture spawned by Leon Leonwood Bean evolved to shape the company he founded in 1912 to thrive in a
much more complex, competitive and informationally aware atmosphere.
March 10, 2005- Gregory E.
Mayo, President, Human Resource Solutions, Inc spoke about
the book "The Five Dysfunctions of a Team" authored by Patrick Lencioni, in the Chestnut Ridge Room of UNCA's Reuter Center.
This book offers a powerful model and steps that can be used to overcome hurdles
that leaders face and build an effective team. He also recommended other

Center at Kennesaw State University was our presenter. Ms. McMillan
has experience in her family's food distribution and repackaging business and
holds a Master's Degree in Conflict Management.
October 27, 2004 - Dr. Alan
G. Robinson, author, educator and consultant presented his program
"Ideas are Free" in the Mountain Suites of UNCA's Highsmith University
Union. This presentation has shown family business owners and
their managers how to radically improve the performance of their organizations
by tapping the huge potential latent in their employees' ideas.
September 14, 2004 - The UNC Asheville
Family Business Forum began its fourth year of programming with a special
evening of dinner theater and great discussions. "A Tough Nut to
Crack" is a one-act play written by Ira Bryck, Director of the University
of Massachusetts Family Business Center. This play has received excellent
reviews and dramatized the relationship between father and son who sometimes
lock horns and sometimes reach a meeting of the minds after 20 years of working
side by side.
May 26, 2004 - The FISH! Philosophy
was presented by Chimney Rock Park. This is a customer service concept
that has been successfully employed in financial institutions, critical care
hospitals, manufacturing, service organizations and, yes, recreational business
and theme parks. It encourages businesses to manage their employees and
suppliers with enthusiasm which will promote profit and success for the
business.
Chimney Rock Park is one of only two locations in
North Carolina certified to teach this exciting customer-service philosophy that
improves not only customer service but employee retention, accountability and
acceptance of necessary change in the workplace.
April 21, 2004 - Amy Schuman, coach and
facilitator of the Next Generation Leadership Institute at the Loyola Family
Business Center in Chicago explored issues a family business and its successor
must address to assure an effective next-generation transition. Schuman,
a senior associate with Family Business Consulting Group, works with family
businesses across the continent, helping them face challenges of transitions,
communications and collaboration. Since 1996 she has served as an adjunct
faculty member at Loyola University-Chicago's Family Business Center where she
facilitates a monthly Peer Lab exploring challenges of family business
leadership.
March 17, 2004 - Michael T. Jacobs,
President/CEO of Jacobs Capital LLC in Atlanta, spoke about exit strategies for
family business owners. Jacobs
Capital LLC provides merger, acquisition and business valuation services to
middle market companies. Mr. Jacobs has been a guest on CNBC's "Smart
Money" and CNN & PBS programs.
February 28, 2004 - "Aspects
of Valuing the Family Business" was the topic of this program presented
by Gary Mathes and James F. Joyner III, CPA's with Crisp, Hughes, Evans, one of
the sponsors of our Forum..
Gary is a member in the Institute of Business Appraisers and the National
Association of Certified Valuation Analysts. James Joyner, of the South
Carolina office of Crisp, Hughes, Evans, is a member of the Institute of
Business Appraisers, the American Society of Appraisers and the National
Association of Certified Valuation Analysts.
November 20, 2003 - "Helping a Family Business Grow,
Delegate Responsibility and Evolve Professionally...the Perspective
of a Non-Family CFO." Mr. Gerald L. Chrisco, chief
financial officer of The Budd Group, headquartered in Winston-Salem,
NC.
Mr. Chrisco is a graduate of North Carolina State
University (B.S. Education) and Wake Forest M.B.A. program. He
currently serves as an Adjunct Professor in the Wake Forest M.B.A.
program and is
active in a number of community organizations. The Budd Group
is currently a major supplier of unarmed security and janitorial
services as well as a grass seed developer and wholesaler with
revenues in excess of $80 million annually.

Ultimate Challenge". Dr. John Ward, co-founder
of The Family Business Consulting Group, Inc. and clinical
professor at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern
University.
Dr. Ward examined the challenges a
family business faces to achieve continued business success and
discussed how family factors can help or hinder the strategic
choices of family business members. A graduate of Northwestern

planning. Mr. Scott spoke on advanced estate planning concepts, with an
emphasis on financial security, lifetime control and asset protection while

Dr. Mandel is Executive Professor and founding Director of the Angell Center for Entrepreneurship at the Babcock School of Management, Wake Forest University. In addition to being a CPA and
professional engineer, Dr. Mandel also participated in three family business ventures himself as well as previously serving as Director of the South Dakota Family Business Initiative.
