Soaring 47 feet above the Highsmith University Union food court is a stunning replica of the Renaissance masterpiece, “The School of Athens.” No tour of Asheville’s art scene is complete without a stop to experience the “School of Athens,” with its expansive scale and exquisite detail. This community art project, unveiled in 2007, was created over two years by 100 students, faculty and area artists under the direction of professor emeritus of art S. Tucker Cookeclose

Asheville Symphony Orchestra’s music director and conductor Daniel Meyer will speak about the rich and colorful Russian symphonic traditions of Shostakovich and Rachmaninoff, with a featured performance by rising star, trumpet player Vladislav Lavrik from the Russian National Orchestra. Symphony Talks, sponsored by the N.C. Center for Creative Retirement at UNC Asheville, are a great way to enjoy the symphony’s Masterworks series and get the inside scoop on the music, composers and soloists.
