When is tuition due?

Pre-registered Students

For students who have pre-registered for the semester they plan to attend:

  • Fall semester payment for pre-registered students is due by August 1, 2009
  • Spring semester payment for pre-registered students is due by December 15, 2009

Students Who Are Not Pre-registered

Students who have not pre-registered for the semester they plan to attend are required to pay in full for the classes they intend to take prior to registering for any classes.

Will/when will my student receive a bill?

To try to insure that each student receives his or her bill from UNC Asheville, we send the bill to all pre-registered students by two methods.  First, we send a bill via e-mail to the student's UNC Asheville e-mail address.  Second, we send a paper bill to the student at the "billing" address in the student's Banner record.  For the paper bill, it is important that the student's billing address be active and current.  If your "billing" address is not current or needs to be changed, please contact the Registrar's office to change your billing address.

Transportation & Parking

How/When does my student get a parking pass?

Freshmen who would like a permit can go to the website: http://www.unca.edu/transportation/, click on Parking Information, and there will be more information. Go to Freshman Student Parking Information, and then click the New Freshman Parking Waiver Application. It will take about 2-3 weeks for a decision.  You will need a wavier from housing if you are a freshman.

Is there a list of parking places on campus?

No. UNC Asheville is located in a residential area. Students can park in the provided lots on campus, and are discouraged in parking in a residential area/neighborhood.  Please refer to the website for specific parking locations for residents, faculty and staff, and non-resident students:  http://unca.edu/campusmap/.

Incoming freshmen are restricted to living on campus, unless they have an approved waiver. Student parking is restricted to the Vivian Street lot for approved freshmen students who have a waiver and live on or off campus.

What should my student do if he/she receives a citation/ticket?

If your student receives a parking ticket/citation, he/she may petition the citation. To do so, fill out the Petition of Parking Citation Form.

The form must be completed in its entirety, attach a copy of the citation(s), attach any documentation that may assist your case and return to Campus Police, or the Transportation Office. Incomplete forms or forms not submitted within 10 business days after the citation was issued will not be considered. The Hearing Officer will review your petition and notify you of the decision regarding your petition within 60 days.

If the petition is denied, you may appeal to the UNC Asheville Transportation Committee, whose membership includes students, faculty and staff (not members of the Transportation Office team). If you wish to submit an appeal, you may contact the Transportation Office or Campus Police to complete the necessary paperwork. The UNC Asheville Transportation Committee is the final arbitrator of appeals.

For more information, please visit the Parking Regulations, Fines, and Appeals website.

Are there visitor permits for parents?

Yes, visitors will need a permit to visit. The Campus Police Office is open during regular office hours from 8am-5pm. Permits are required on campus from7:30am-5pm, Monday through Friday. Permits are not required on the weekends, campus breaks, and the holidays.

How does my student get around without a car? What are their options?

Current students can utilize the Asheville Transit Bus System with a Passport sticker on their OneCard. During the first few weeks of school Campus Police will be issuing Passport stickers. Any time after, students will need to visit the campus police to obtain a sticker.

A majority of freshmen on campus don’t have access to a car. If the students are downtown and cannot get back to campus safely using public transportation, they can utilize the New Blue Bird Taxi Company, at most three times a semester.

Can my student change room assignments?

Room changes will not be permitted until one week after classes begin. The purpose of this freeze period is to allow time to locate unexpected vacancies so that students on the waiting list may be notified and to provide a period in which the residence hall population may stabilize.

Students will be notified when room changes can be requested.  Two days will be set aside for students to move if they have obtained approval. Unauthorized room changes will result in a fee to each resident involved, and those residents may be required to return to their original room assignments.

What kind of furniture is provided in each room?

Residence hall rooms are furnished with beds, desks, chairs, chest of drawers, window blinds, MicroFridges®, and closet space. Residents furnish their own linens and other personal items. It is the responsibility of the student to maintain the living area. Students are accountable for all university property in their rooms. Room furniture should never be left in study areas or halls. Furniture from common areas should never be taken to individual rooms.

We encourage you to personalize your room in a way that makes it your home.  However, we cannot allow certain modifications due to fire codes and university regulations. A charge will be assessed and the room restored to the proper condition upon initial notification of a policy violation.  Removal of door closures, disassembly of furniture, removal of closet doors, hanging anything from sprinkler heads, lights, or doorways or defacing furniture is prohibited.

Is smoking permitted in the residence halls?

Residence halls are smoke-free.  In accordance with the North Carolina General Administration and the University Smoking Policy, no smoking is allowed in any part of the residence halls.  There are marked designated smoking areas near the residence halls.

Is alcohol permitted in the residence halls?

In accordance with the Residence Hall Policy Book,

    1.     Students of legal drinking age (21 years or older) will be permitted to drink alcoholic beverages in their rooms or if they are an invited guest in another resident’s room if that resident is 21years of age or older.

    2.     Transportation of open alcoholic beverage containers, as well as alcoholic beverages in open containers, will not be permitted in the residence halls.

    3.     Consumption of alcoholic beverages in residence hall common areas (TV rooms, study rooms, lounge areas, etc.) will not be permitted.

    4.     Kegs are not permitted in any residence hall area.

    5.     Students who are not of legal drinking age are not allowed to drink, transport or possess alcoholic beverages at any time.

    6.    If you are of legal drinking age and choose to drink, you may not drink in any public area or in public view.

      a.     If you are drinking in your room, you should have the door closed so that your use of alcohol is not visible to the public or from a public area.

      b.    An exception to this is only when an event is sanctioned by the University (i.e. special tailgating events).

The University will establish no policy or regulation that sanctions either the use of alcoholic beverages or any action, which contravenes state or federal law regarding their purchase or consumption. North Carolina Alcoholic Beverage Control laws make it unlawful for anyone under 21 years of age to purchase, possess or consume (or for anyone to aid such a minor in purchasing, possessing or consuming) alcoholic beverages.

All members of the University community are responsible for obeying state laws indicated above and state laws pertaining to the transportation of alcohol and the consumption of alcohol in public places (General Statutes 18–51). Students are further expected to follow the university’s Alcoholic Beverage Policy as stated in the Student Handbook and Residents’ Handbook.

The University discourages drunkenness and other abuses of alcoholic beverages by any person. Being under the influence of alcohol and disorderly is considered a serious breach of conduct, and students who violate these standards are subject to appropriate disciplinary action as outlined in the Student Handbook. The University prohibits consumption of alcohol by persons less than 21 years of age.

Can my student designate a roommate choice?
