Faces of UNC Asheville
Tim Barnwell ’77
Photographer Tim Barnwell (Class of 1977) has risen to acclaim by capturing the beauty of his own Appalachian backyard through stunning black-and-white photographs. He is the author of three books of fine arts photography that feature portraits of traditional musicians, craftspeople and farmers. More than 1,000 of his photographs have been published in magazines ranging from Time and Newsweek to Billboard and American Style. His work has been widely exhibited across the United States and abroad and is in the permanent collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the SOHO Photo Gallery and the New Orleans Museum of Art.
“Photography is an excuse to explore things, people, situations and ideas. And I think that all plays into the liberal arts education.”
