Creating a PBwiki
for use with an online discussion group

What is a wiki?

"Wikis are easy-to-use Web pages that let you collaborate online and share information."

OBJECTIVE

Create a basic PBwiki for use with an online discussion group.

INSTRUCTION

This module is intended to be used as a reminder to participants that have been exposed to this content in a face-to-face mini-workshop.

Read through these instruction BEFORE following them step by step. Ask questions before doing anything you feel uncomfortable about. (i.e.: Giving your password out to the world to your entire site.)

A more exhaustive treatment of how to setup/maintain PBwiki is covered on the http://pbwiki.com/ site.

  • Open Microsoft Internet Explorer
    (Firefox may also be used but not Opera or Safari)

  • A page similar to the following should appear

  • Enter "Site Name" (read page instructions for naming details)

May consider naming the site for the discussion group or class. (i.e.: 2007_WSSU_UNCA_forum or UNCA_EDUC311)

  • Enter "Your Email"

    The example above has been given:

    • Site Name: frandall

    • Your Email: frandall@unca.edu
       

  • Select Create My Wiki button

    The example above attempts to create a PBwiki with the address:

    An activation confirmation message is simultaneously sent to the email address supplied. The site is not activated until the confirmation message is acted on.
     

  • A page similar to the following should appear

  • Wait a few minutes (figuratively) and check the email account supplied for a message that looks similar to the following

  • Click on the link the message instructs to activate the account

  • A page similar to the following should appear

  • Enter "Pick a password"

If others are to be allowed to comment on your wiki they will need to be supplied this same password. Use a "throw-away" password.

  • Enter "Confirm password"

  • Select Educational for "What's this wiki for?"

  • Select "Make my wiki public"

  • Select "Agree to our Terms of Service"

  • Click Take me to my wiki! button

  • A page similar to the following should appear

  • A basic PBwiki has been created.
