Setting Up Bulldog Account for Web Pages

Each student, staff, and faculty at UNCA can post their own web pages on UNCA servers.  Students can use their bulldog server accounts to post web pages.  All web page files must be copied (transferred) to the bulldog server in a folder called public_html.  When you put a file called index.html into this folder, you will have a web site with the URL of http://www.unca.edu/~yourusername (replace yourusername with your bulldog username).

Before the rest of the world can see your web page, however, you must type in a command that gives permission to the server to allow access to look into the public_html folder.  You must log onto your bulldog account, type the command called openhomepage at the prompt and hit return.

Here are the steps to get to the prompt and to type in the openhomepage command.

If you are on a computer at UNCA, you should click on Net Term.  Many computers have Net Term icon on the desktop.  If not, you should find Net Term when you click on the Start button.  When Net Term window comes up, select the bulldog account and click Connect.

You can also get to your bulldog account (on campus or from home) by clicking on Start (at the bottom left of the computer screen) and then click on Run (from the pop up menu).  In the Run window, type the following:  telnet bulldog.unca.edu and then click OK.  This will send you over to the window so you can log into your bulldog account.

Here is the Run Window:

Either way you get into bulldog, you should next see the bulldog log on window.  You should enter your bulldog username and then enter your bulldog password.  If you don't use your bulldog account, you might have to click Enter a few times to get to the prompt.  You might also come up to a menu screen (if so, you will need to exit the menu to get to the prompt).

At the prompt, type openhomepage and then press the Enter key.

You will follow any instructions that come up and type yes and press Enter again.  Then you should get a message at the prompt that says "Your home page directory is now open."

That's all you need to do.  Type exit and press Enter and log out of bulldog.  You only have to enter this openhomepage command once.  Now you can publish your index.html (home page) to the public_html folder on your bulldog account and you are online!!
