1. 8/14 Instructor presents information on course organization and content.  Class discussion of the question:  What makes a good research topic?
2. 8/19 No class:  Instructor out of town
3. 8/21 Class discussion of case studies using Marc Villegas’ Carolina Colortones:  A Case Study of the Structure-Conduct-Performance Paradigm as an example.
4. 8/26 Continuation of class discussion of case studies using Wally Nour's A Valuation of the Country Club of Asheville as an example.
5. 8/28 Undergraduate Research’s grant proposal workshop for students: 10-11 am or 3-4 pm, Laurel Forum, Karpen Hall.  Attendance required unless prior arrangements are made with Dr. Bell.  I will arrange for a tape of the presentation to be available in the Undergraduate Research Office, 126 Karpen Hall.

Class discussion of empirical tests using Jay Pratt’s An Empirical Evaluation of the Theory of Compensating Wage Differentials for U.S. Career Firefighters as an example.
8. 9/9 Continuation of class discussion of empirical tests using Chris Bell’s The Assignment of Fiscal Responsibility in a Federal State:  An Empirical Assessment as an example.
9. 9/11 Class discussion of studies in the history of economic thought using Chris Bell’s Charles Ellet, Jr., and the Theory of Optimal Input Choice as an example.
10. 9/16 Schedule appointment week of September 23 - 27 to discuss progress on potential research topics with instructor.
Class discussion of theoretical extensions using Ronald Coase’s The Nature of the Firm as an example.
11. 9/18 Class discussion of problem set #1:  A Sample Preliminary Research Proposal;  discussion of proposed research topics.

13. 9/25 Schedule appointment week of September 30 - October 2 to discuss NCUR presentation grant proposal and abstract with instructor.
