The Five Courses of Study

Every economics major follows one of five courses of study (or "concentrations"): General Economics, for those who desire a broad overview of economic processes and thought; Environmental Economics, for those who wish to investigate economic issues and policies in relation to the environment and natural resources; International Economics, for those who wish to explore the international dimensions of economies in relation to political developments; Monetary Economics and Finance, for those who wish to better understand the monetary and financial aspects of the economy; and Economics with Teacher Licensure, for those who seek careers in secondary education.  Consider too the Minor in Economics, which is for those who wish to complement their studies in another department with a solid grounding in economics.

Each of the five concentrations is built around a common core of eight classes . . .

  • ECON 101:  Principles of Macroeconomics

  • ECON 102:  Principles of Microeconomics

  • ECON 301:  Intermediate Macroeconomics

  • ECON 302:  Intermediate Microeconomics

  • ECON 365:  Econometrics

  • ECON 380:  Approaches to Research in Economics

  • ECON 480:  Research Seminar in Economics

  • STAT  185:  Introductory Statistics

. . . and one of the following seminars (between two of which students can choose):

  • ECON 316:  Transaction Cost Economics

  • ECON 406:  Seminar in Financial Economics

  • ECON 450:  Seminar in Economics

The concentrations differ in the mix of applied, elective, and non-economics courses they require, with the specific mix determined by the area of the economy the concentration explores in depth.  To learn more about a particular course of study, click on any of the links above.

To learn more about ECON 480, the capstone of many students' UNCA Economics careers, visit the senior research project.
