How to Become an Economics Major or Minor

It is to become an economics major or minor in economics: you need only discuss your plans and fill out a declaration of major (or minor) form with the chair of the economics department, Dr. Jeff Konz. This is generally done after Freshman year and before the start of the Junior year. Whenever it is done, UNCA requires that you meet the English language (LANG 120) general education requirement before declaring a major or minor, so you must have passed these classes before filling out your declaration form with Dr. Konz. Dr. Konz's office is Karpen 156. If you want to be introduced, ask an economics major or an economics professor you already know -- she or he will be glad to do it! Or you can just stop by Karpen 156.

Dr. Konz will want to know what classes you have already taken and whether you have a particular career objective in mind. If you wish to major in economics Dr. Konz will discuss the the five courses of study in economics with you (also known as "concentrations") and help you choose the one that best meets your needs.  You do not need to worry about the five courses of study if all you wish to do is minor in economics, though reviewing them may help you choose your economics courses.

Dr. Konz will help you fill out a declaration of major form after you have chosen a course of study. On it you will specify the concentration you intend to pursue and the person you want to be your major advisor. If you do not have a particular major advisor in mind, one will be assigned to you. Once you've completed your declaration of major form and copies have been distributed to the appropriate offices you've become an economics major!  Students who pursue a double major will fill out two declaration of major forms and have two major advisors, one in each department.

The process is the same for students wishing to minor in economics, only you won't need to specify a concentration and you won't be assigned a formal advisor.  Any member of the economics faculty, however, will be glad to suggest courses and answer your questions. If at some point you wish to switch from a minor to a major you should discuss your plan with Dr. Konz and complete a declaration of major form.
