The Davis Brothers

Hometown/WNC Heritage:

  • Twin sons of Charles and Teresa Davis of Marshall, NC.
  • 1993 graduates of Madison High School and lifelong residents of Marshall, NC.

UNCA Experiences:

  • December 1997 graduates with a double B.A. in Economics and History.
  • Participants in the UNCA Undergraduate Research program.
  • In the Spring of 1997, presented senior research in History at the 11th annual National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) at the University of Texas in Austin, TX.
  • Active participants in UNCA Economics Club (The Issues Forum, Bowl for Kids Sake).
  • In his senior year, Keith received the Economics Department David Reiner Award.
  • In his senior year, Kevin received the Economics Department Award for Outstanding Scholarship.
  • Both members of Omicron Delta Epsilon, the national honor society for economics students.

UNCG Experiences:

  • Both attended UNC-Greensboro's Bryan School of Business and Economics earning an M.A. in Applied Economics in December of 1999.
  • Worked with Dr. Rosenbaum included data analysis using the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) to estimate the effects of expansions in the Earned Income Tax Credit on family structure decisions and the employment of single mothers.
  • Continue to work independently on their own research projects that began at UNC-Greensboro. Keith is currently authoring a paper that estimates the extent of wage penalties among Vietnam-era veterans while Kevin is working to develop new statistical techniques that more accurately estimate the demographic determinants of time spent on welfare.
Current Employment Activities:
  • Now reside in Cary, NC and are employed as associate economists at Research Triangle Institute in Durham, NC. RTI is a contract research organization located on a 180-acre campus in North Carolina's Research Triangle Park.  Created in 1958 jointly by UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke University, and NC State University, RTI is the nation's fourth largest contract research organization. The brothers are assigned to RTI's Center for Economics Research which conducts applied studies in health, food safety, environmental, and pharmaceutical economics. At RTI, the brothers specialize in research aimed at investigating the economic consequences of substance abuse as well as the cost-effectiveness of national programs aimed at reducing substance abuse. Keith is currently involved in projects aimed at estimating the effects of various levels of alcohol use on wages, employment, and educational attainment. Kevin is currently involved in a project aimed at estimating the effects of anti-tobacco advertising campaigns on smoking rates and tobacco use among American youth.

Hobbies/Interests:

  • An affection for all sports!
  • Personal talents in artwork.
  • Music -- continue to play guitar in a band created with hometown buddies in Madison County.
