Dr. Bruce Larson

Professor
of Economics and Director
of the Center for Teaching and Learning. Dr. Larson earned a B.A. from the
University of Wisconsin at Madison and a Ph.D. from the University of North
Carolina at Chapel Hill. His principal intellectual interests lie in the
development of mathematical economics, the interrelationship of economics and
religion, and the history and economics of higher education. A versatile
instructor, Dr. Larson has taught all four humanities courses and currently
teaches principles of microeconomics, managerial finance, econometrics, and
mathematical economics. His research on the history of economic thought and
microeconomic theory has appeared in History of Political Economy,
Quality and Quantity, and the Southern Economic Journal. Dr.
Larson’s UNCA service has included chairing the Department of Economics, the
Academic Policies Committee, the Institutional Development Committee/University
Planning Council, and the Faculty Senate. His life has been joined with that of
Jean Larson, a registered nurse and committed volunteer with an M.S.N. from the
University of North Carolina at Chapel, since 1971 — their
children are Hope, a freelance artist who is a graduate of the Art Institute of
Chicago, and Will, a student of computer science and economics at Centre
College; the Larson family spent the 1990-91 academic year in France. A firm
believer in physical, as well as mental, fitness, Dr. Larson regularly plays
basketball with students, faculty, and staff during his lunch hour. The
spiritual plays an important role in his off-campus life and he has served the
Unitarian Universalist Church of Asheville in many capacities, including Chair
of its Committee on Ministry and President of its Board of Trustees.
