Scholarships and Awards
Economics majors may, of course, apply for any general scholarship
that the university offers. There are, however, a number of
scholarships which you are more likely to get if you are an economics
major. Scholarships include:
- Bank of Asheville Scholarship ($1,000 per year). Funds for this
scholarship are compliments of the
Bank of Asheville.
- David W. Berson and James F. Smith Scholarship (at least $500
per year). Awarded on the basis of academic merit and/or
financial need. Funds for this scholarship are compliments
of David W. Berson and James F. Smith.
- Shirley C. Browning
Scholarship ($500 per year). Funds for this scholarship are
compliments of Jim Washburn (1977).
- Busby Family Scholarship
($500 per year). Funds for this scholarship are compliments of Shawn
Busby (1995).
- Larry Casper Scholarship ($500 per year).
Funds for this scholarship are compliments of Larry Casper, CPA.
Mr. Casper is a friend of UNCA's Economics Department and a
financial advisor with Edward Jones.
- Keith and Kevin Davis Scholarship (at
least $200 per year). Awarded on the basis of academic
achievement and financial need with special consideration given to
students from Madison County. Funds for this scholarship are
compliments of Keith and Kevin Davis (1997).

Economics Alumni Scholarships (multiple, at least $500 per year).
Awarded on the basis of academic achievement, service to the campus
and/or community and financial need.
Funds for these scholarships are compliments of the following
alumni: Marc Allen (1989), Sarah
Bumgarner (1982), Lacy Cross (1993), David Dunn (1979), Ed Erwin
(1970), Mike Erwin (1976), Pat Latta (2000), Lynda McCaskill (2002), Chris Nimsch (1999) and Sally Pedley
(1977).
- Charles D. Gentry Scholarship (at least $1,000 per year). Special
consideration given to students with financial need and service to
the community. Funds for this scholarship are compliments of
Charles D. Gentry (1988).
- Peggy and Carlyle Pooser
Scholarship ($1,000 per year). This scholarship is established
in honor of Peggy and Carlyle Pooser, grandparents of UNCA economics
alum, Andy Pooser. Peggy and Carlyle have always demonstrated
enthusiasm, humor and hard work. Despite limited financial means,
they placed their three sons through college and have stayed happily
married even after numerous SEC football upsets. The
Pooser family hopes this gift helps students to complete a college
degree and to confront challenges with zeal. Funds for this
scholarship are compliments of Andy Pooser (1991).
- Joseph Reiner Scholarship in Memory of David
Reiner (1983, about $1,000 per year). Awarded on the basis of
academic achievement and financial need with special consideration
given to students who are employed while attending college.
Funds for this scholarship are compliments of Joseph Reiner.
- Wealth Advisor Group Scholarship ($500 per year). Awarded on
the basis of academic merit and/or financial need with special
consideration given to students taking finance classes.
Funds for this scholarship are compliments of the Wealth Advisor
Group.
- Dana Zimmerman Scholarship ($300 per
year). Awarded on the basis of academic merit and service to
the community. Funds for this scholarship are compliments of
Cynthia Roberts (1991).

The department makes the following awards each year. Each
comes with a check due to the generosity of alumni and friends of the
department.
- Outstanding Performance Award (at least $200). For best overall
performance in economics.
- Keith and Kevin Davis Outstanding
Research Award (at least $200). For best paper in Economics 480.
Funds for this award are compliments of Keith and Kevin Davis
(1997).
- Dana Zimmerman Service Award (at
least $200). For the economics major who best exemplifies
service to the school and the community. Funds for this
award are compliments of Cynthia Roberts (1991).
- David Reiner Awards (2 of at least
$200). Two awards for students who excelled in economics and
were employed while in college. Preference given to students from
the WNC area. Funds for this award are compliments of David Reiner (1983).
- Morgan Stanley Award for Excellence in Finance
($200). For an understanding of financial concepts and the
ability to use these concepts to solve real-world financial
problems. Funds for this award are compliments of Morgan
Stanley.
As you can see from the list of scholarships and awards, our
graduates have been very generous to the department. To learn
