Scholarships and Awards

Economics majors may, of course, apply for any general scholarship that the university offers. There are, however, a number of scholarships which you are more likely to get if you are an economics major.  Scholarships include:

  1. Bank of Asheville Scholarship ($1,000 per year).  Funds for this scholarship are compliments of the Bank of Asheville.
  2. David W. Berson and James F. Smith Scholarship (at least $500 per year).  Awarded on the basis of academic merit and/or financial need.  Funds for this scholarship are compliments of David W. Berson and James F. Smith.
  3. Shirley C. Browning Scholarship ($500 per year).  Funds for this scholarship are compliments of Jim Washburn (1977).
  4. Busby Family Scholarship ($500 per year).  Funds for this scholarship are compliments of Shawn Busby (1995).
  5. Larry Casper Scholarship ($500 per year).  Funds for this scholarship are compliments of Larry Casper, CPA.  Mr. Casper is a friend of UNCA's Economics Department and a financial advisor with Edward Jones.
  6. Keith and Kevin Davis Scholarship (at least $200 per year).  Awarded on the basis of academic achievement and financial need with special consideration given to students from Madison County.  Funds for this scholarship are compliments of Keith and Kevin Davis (1997).
  7. Economics Alumni Scholarships (multiple, at least $500 per year).  Awarded on the basis of academic achievement, service to the campus and/or community and financial need.  Funds for these scholarships are compliments of the following alumni:  Marc Allen (1989), Sarah Bumgarner (1982), Lacy Cross (1993), David Dunn (1979), Ed Erwin (1970), Mike Erwin (1976), Pat Latta (2000), Lynda McCaskill (2002), Chris Nimsch (1999) and Sally Pedley (1977).
  8. Charles D. Gentry Scholarship (at least $1,000 per year).  Special consideration given to students with financial need and service to the community.  Funds for this scholarship are compliments of Charles D. Gentry (1988).
  9. Peggy and Carlyle Pooser Scholarship ($1,000 per year).  This scholarship is established in honor of Peggy and Carlyle Pooser, grandparents of UNCA economics alum, Andy Pooser.  Peggy and Carlyle have always demonstrated enthusiasm, humor and hard work.  Despite limited financial means, they placed their three sons through college and have stayed happily married  even after numerous SEC football upsets.  The Pooser family hopes this gift helps students to complete a college degree and to confront challenges with zeal.  Funds for this scholarship are compliments of Andy Pooser (1991).
  10. Joseph Reiner Scholarship in Memory of David Reiner (1983, about $1,000 per year).  Awarded on the basis of academic achievement and financial need with special consideration given to students who are employed while attending college.  Funds for this scholarship are compliments of Joseph Reiner.
  11. Wealth Advisor Group Scholarship ($500 per year).  Awarded on the basis of academic merit and/or financial need with special consideration given to students taking finance classes.  Funds for this scholarship are compliments of the Wealth Advisor Group.
  12. Dana Zimmerman Scholarship ($300 per year).  Awarded on the basis of academic merit and service to the community.  Funds for this scholarship are compliments of Cynthia Roberts (1991).
