Marc Allen
My name is Marc Allen, and I’m writing this in first person, as
any other method seemed contrived at best.
I was born and raised in Asheville, a place that I look on very
fondly and quite frankly consider as one of the most beautiful cities
in the U.S. After graduating from high school in 1983 (Clyde A.
Erwin), I enlisted in the Army to secure future educational funding
through a generous college funding program offered at the time that
required only two years in the Army. After completing my two years in
service, I began the fall semester of 1985 at UNCA with the intent of
transferring to NC State to complete a degree in electrical
engineering.
Two things coincided to change my direction. The first was those
damn physics courses and the second was my true enjoyment of the
economics courses I took. I found economics to be intuitive but
challenging, and the learning environment wonderful. The professors
were very involved with the students, and the student-professor
interaction in class inspiring. I went on to complete my studies in
four years at UNCA and actually enrolled in the graduate program at
UNC-Greensboro to pursue a master’s degree in economics. I enjoyed
my time there as well, and went on to find a rewarding career working
in the transportation industry for Burlington Northern Santa Fe
Railway (BNSF)
With BNSF, I am professionally satisfied, having had the
opportunity to work in varied roles and to live in three different
cities along the way (Chicago, Lawrence, KS, and Dallas, TX). On the
personal front, I couldn’t be happier either. I have been married to
my wonderful wife, Susan for 10 years and have one beautiful daughter,
Delaney who is two, and a son on the way. Hopefully, my contribution
helps someone pursue their education and fulfill some of their dreams.
