As the list above demonstrates, economics graduates work in many fields, including the financial services
industry, banking, education and manufacturing, as well as state, local and
federal government. In fact, any job in which the questions "What are we
trying to do?" and "What are our alternatives?" arise, is a job
in which an economics graduate has much to offer.
The critical thinking and analytical skills that economics helps develop
provide good preparation for some types of graduate study. The Department has an
excellent relationship with the Department
of Economics at UNCG, where our
students routinely work toward a Masters of Economics; by some ratings UNCG
has the second best Master’s of Economics program in the United States. In
addition our graduates not infrequently follow their UNCA studies with law
school, work toward a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree or
doctoral studies in Economics. Schools at which our graduates have earned
doctorates in economics include the North Carolina State University and
the University of Washington.
Please see preparing for life after graduation
for practical advice on how best to position yourself for a smooth transition
from your studies at UNCA. The advice includes timetables for both
students planning to go straight to the job market and
for those planning to attend graduate or professional
school first. The EconInfo
economics and finance information page
contains links to a number of additional resources useful to students thinking beyond
graduation.
