The University of North Carolina at Asheville, a four-year public liberal arts university located in the mountains of western North Carolina, has earned a national reputation for its programs in the humanities, undergraduate research and environmental studies. UNC Asheville ranks fifth in the nation among public liberal arts colleges in the newest U.S. News & World Report's "America's Best Colleges."

UNCA enrolls 3,350 students pursuing bachelor’s degrees in about 30 majors in the natural and social sciences, humanities, pre-professional and professional areas, as well as the Masters of Liberal Arts.  With an average class size of 20 UNCA emphasizes a personal approach to undergraduate education characterized by close faculty–student interactions, challenging academic programs and opportunities for learning outside the classroom.  The university has received national recognition for its Humanities and Undergraduate Research programs.

Several steps are taken to assure each distance course offering reflects a high level of quality teaching and learning equal to that of on campus experiences.

Distance learners are given access to Campus pipeline, a personalized web interface that is integrated with UNC Asheville’s web services and products. Library Services are available for distance learners providing a “personal librarian,” “ask-a-librarian” reference service, the library catalog and remote access to online resources.

GERM 484   Multiculturalism in Contemporary Germany (4 c hrs)

In this course we will explore contemporary German identity and ask the question: Who or what is German today? The texts for this course challenge traditional images of Germans and Germany and reflect the cultural, ethnic and racial diversity in present day Germany. Topics to be discussed include: the lives and voices of German minorities, foreigners and their experience in Germany; relationships between East and West Germans; German young people and their quest for a new identity. Because this course seeks to present a picture of Germany as a multicultural society, and provide a multitude of perspectives, the materials in the course cover a broad range of topics, writing styles, and genres. Bu providing a full range of topics and perspectives, the course hopes to:

  • confront students with new ways of seeing German identity
  • give students a vehicle to reflect on their own experiences with diverse cultures
  • encourage students to be aware of, sensitive to, and appreciative of other cultures
  • invite students to ponder: What is identity? What are the factors that have created my own?
     

STAT 185  Introduction to Statistics
(4 cr hrs)   CLOSED

This course is an introduction to the statistical analysis of numerical data. Students will be taught how to properly collect data, summarize it, and extrapolate information it using appropriate procedures. Major topics include: descriptive statistics, discrete and continuous probability distributions; sampling methods; statistical inference and linear regression analysis. For each major topic projects are assigned that students are required to submit for evaluation. Two thirds of the grade will be based on Computer-based assignments.


LANG 373 ST: Web Writing:
           Content Development
(3 cr hrs)

This class will assist in developing the specific writing skills needed to become successful at website writing. Because web site content has to be high quality writing that reflects the public image, mission, and goals of an organization it must be factual, current, grammatically correct and must communicate the message effectively. Participants in this class will learn the following techniques:
*  how to build variations into text presentations
*  how to write taglines for photographs and graphics
*  how to write 'chunky' paragraphs for the web
*  how to link internal as well as external pages
*  how to use keywords strategically in research and writing.

PHYS 171 Special Topics: Stars, Constellations and Deep Sky Objects
                                     
            (1 Cr. Hr)

This pass/fail online interactive workshop carries one university credit plus three technology CEUs.  It employs the latest in web-based technology to cover celestial latitude and longitude, the major constellations and properties of stars.  Beautiful photos taken by the Hubble Space Telescope will be included to explore the wonders of deep-sky objects such as star clusters, nebulae and galaxies.  Our workshop/course also introduces some of Einstein's concepts and how they are applicable in astronomy.

Tuition Information Statement
The above courses are 3 and 4 credit hours each and the cost for tuition & fees for in-state students during the 2008-09 Academic year is $86.06 per credit hour. Out of state students must pay $468.83 per credit hour in the 2008-09 Academic year.
