Multiculturalism in Contemporary Germany
(4
c hrs)
In this course we will explore contemporary German
identity and ask the question: Who or what is German today? The texts for
this course challenge traditional images of Germans
and Germany and reflect the cultural, ethnic and racial
diversity in present day Germany. Topics to be discussed include: the lives
and voices of German minorities, foreigners and their experience in Germany;
relationships between East and West Germans; German young people and their
quest for a new identity. Because this course seeks to present a picture of
Germany as a multicultural society, and provide a multitude of perspectives,
the materials in the course cover a broad range of topics, writing styles,
and genres. Bu providing a full range of topics and perspectives, the course
hopes to:
-
confront students with new ways of seeing German identity
- give students a vehicle to reflect on their own
experiences with diverse cultures
- encourage students to be aware of, sensitive to,
and appreciative of other cultures
- invite students to ponder: What is identity? What
are the factors that have created my own?
