Distance Education

UNCA is working to deliver regular academic courses on-line in response to the growing demand for non-traditional learning environments. As part of the UNC system Task Force on Distance Learning, the director is collaborating with faculty, universities, community colleges and other constituents to develop and deliver high-caliber liberal arts and professional courses at a distance.

Extension classes are credit bearing and are taught off-campus throughout the area. Core academic classes as well as special interest topics have been taught at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, Asheville City School Administration building, Asheville School, Blue Ridge Community College, City of Asheville municipal building, McDowell Technical Community College, Montford Learning Center, Tri-County Community College, Mission-St.Joseph's Health System, the YMI Center, and Asheville Area Arts Council, and the Covenant Reformed Presbyterian Church.

The bulk of the extension courses offered to the general community are comprised of professional development courses for Teachers, the Great Smokies Writing Program, courses for Lateral Entry teachers, and courses for professional development to city personnel.  Correctional education courses are offered each semester in four correctional facilities in Western North Carolina for students who meet the criteria.

TEACHER EDUCATION
Three online Interactive Multimedia Teacher Workshops using NASA imagery to explore Earth Science and Astronomy will be offered to K-12 teachers during the 2008-09 academic year. The focus for the workshops is on the K-8 North Carolina Standard Course of Study, and the national standards recommended in the "Atlas of Science Literary Project 2061". Although K-8 education is the focus,  participants will be exposed to unique interdisciplinary ways to teach earth science and astronomy, so the workshops will be valuable to high school teachers as well. The workshops are:
