UNC Asheville Cultural Collaborative Program Grants
2008-2009
As part of its commitment to supporting the university’s academic goals,
the Office of Cultural & Special Events (CASE) has coordinated a volunteer
university standing committee for over 25 years, the Cultural & Special
Events Committee. It is this committee that chooses Collaborative Grant
recipients each year.
Comprised of 8 students, 1 staff and 3 rotating faculty members, the
3-part mission of the Cultural Committee has always been: assist the
CASE office with determining the use of annual student fees that are the
basis of operations, assist in finding, reviewing and choosing each year’s
major performing arts and speakers presentations and, early each spring
semester, send out a call for Cultural Collaborative Program Grants. These
grants are designed to help support other campus departments and groups in
providing more extensive and curriculum-enhancing educational opportunities
in the arts and sciences for the next academic year.
The Committee members review grant proposals in early April along
with the Director of Cultural Events, who serves as Committee chair
but does not vote on allocations. Committee members go through an
impartial and lengthy decision process to thoroughly review all proposals
and carefully choose programs to which they will allocate grants.
Their decisions are final.
IMPORTANT FACTS:
● Any UNC Asheville campus student group, any department or program may
apply. The process is not open to off-campus groups though university groups
may enlist their support as co-sponsors. Applicants do not need to present
their proposals in person.
● Most applications that receive funding are for on-campus programs.
A few selective off-campus opportunities may be funded each year if these
meet the University’s mission.
● The Director of the Office of Cultural & Special Events is available to work
with each year’s grant applicants in crafting proposals. The Director does not vote
on grant allocations. Please call the Office of Cultural & Special Events for more
information on grant writing assistance.
● Only fully completed proposals returned by the published deadlines are accepted
and reviewed for allocations. Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted for review.
● The size of the grant pool may vary from year to year but an average of over
$10,000 is given annually to about 20-25 groups. Grants may range from less than
$200 to over $1000. PLEASE NOTE: There are not sufficient grant funds in this program
to underwrite major programming. The small to medium size grants available are often
used as partial funding for projected programs.
● Funding requests often total more than 3-4 times the available grant pool.
Therefore, programs that exhibit campus-wide student appeal, a high level of
student involvement and those with multiple campus sponsors are especially encouraged.
These kinds of programs are the funding priority of Committee members.
● Past proposals have included: special lectures and talks, film screenings,
poets’ and authors’ readings and class visits, panel discussions, master classes
and clinics, campus performances, limited ticket purchases to other area venues
and performances, displays and exhibits, workshops, and more. See the list below
for the interesting proposals that were allocated partial or complete program funding
for 2007-08 by last year’s Cultural & Special Events Committee.
● Grant recipients must agree in writing to include the following on all
publicity materials: “This program is funded in part by the UNC Asheville Cultural
& Special Events Committee.”
● Grant recipients must provide a written program evaluation once the activity
is completed or they will not be eligible for future funding consideration.
● Any portion of allocated funds unused by May 31 each year reverts to the
Office of Cultural & Special Events.
● Please note that the current members of the Cultural Events Committee
have elected not to use the Cultural Collaborative Program Grant funds in the following ways:
● ● Funds may not be used to pay UNC Asheville faculty or staff for services.
Student workers may be paid for technical support services if necessary for the program.
● ● Student, faculty or staff travel and conference expenses will not be funded.
Please contact your Dean or VC for information on funding these activities in your division.
● ● Funds may not be used to purchase equipment but may be requested for rental of items
essential to the programming.
