Landfill Gas Applications:
Landfill gas will be the primary fuel for the gas-fired-kilns on the
Craft Campus. The gas will also meet general heating and cooling
requirements for the studio.
Suggestions and Needs for Clay Studio: These notes represent
a preliminary vision of the Craft Campus developed early in 2004.
- A working critique room (600
square feet with 12 foot ceilings) --concrete floor, no windows,
big double doors or roll-up door (8x10 foot) large enough for
fork lift to enter
- Formal space -- a grid system
above and open ceiling with exposed roof structure , for hanging
heavy work
- Storage closet and photography
room off the crit room -- Storage for pedestals and other
equipment, a permanent set-up for photographing document work
(300 square feet)
- A shower in each bathroom
allowing students to clean up before returning to campus
- Loading dock needed for clay
deliveries
- Natural light through skylights
- Covered but open areas -- Clay
mixing area, clay reclamation area and storage area for dry clay and
chemicals for glazes; must be moisture free (500 square feet)
- Hammer-mill to grind into a grog
for clay; area can be shared with sculpture program
- Trench/drain in concrete floor
with large trap
- Space for B.F.A. majors (4500
square feet)
- Space for beginner and
intermediate students (750 square feet)
- 19 potters' wheels in a throwing
area (24x30 feet)
- Handbuilding area in the same space
with 4x8 foot tables
- Two sinks in B.F.A. area, two
sinks in beginning/intermediate area
- Glaze room in separate sections
- Mixing raw materials (400 square feet)
- Application of glazes (400 square feet)
- Spray booth with a water wall and sand
filtering system (24 square feet)
- Slip casting room
- Drying room with shelves for
bisque and for glaze (500 square feet)
- Compressed air supplied
throughout the building
- Polycarbonate roof
- Covered breezeways with lockers
between buildings for student storage and interaction
