Pisgah House is a new, multi-purpose facility that will serve as the
residence for current and future UNC Asheville Chancellors, as well as a
location for University-hosted meetings, receptions, dinner, programs
and performances. Pisgah House, its grounds and its access drive will be
located on two acres of the 50-acre property owned by the University
that is bordered by W.T. Weaver Boulevard and Broadway. The access drive
will intersect with the entrance road to the USDA Forest Service
Southern Research Station.
Pisgah House is a privately funded project of the UNC Asheville
Foundation. While classroom buildings are funded by state allocations
and bond referendums, each campus in the University of North Carolina
system is required to provide a residence for its chancellor. When
completed, the Foundation will donate Pisgah House to the state for use
by UNC Asheville.
Construction of Pisgah House began in
mid-October 2007.
Construction is expected to take 16
months, with an estimated completion date in early 2009.
Below is information
concerning the construction process. A detailed Q&A can be seen at:
http://www.unca.edu/news/PisgahHouseQ&A.html. If you have
additional questions now or at
any time during construction, we
invite you to contact UNC Asheville's Campus Operations Office at
828/232-5031 or
construction@unca.edu.
Road Access: The
driveway to Pisgah House will be located just off Weaver Boulevard and
will intersect with the entrance road to the USDA Forest Service
Southern Research Station. The Forest Service entrance road will be open
to normal traffic throughout construction. There will not be road access
to Pisgah House through the North Street-Nantahala Street-Dortch Avenue
neighborhood. You can see a site map at
www.unca.edu/news/pisgah_house_map.html.
Pisgah Trails
Access: The public will continue to have full access to the
extensive walking and biking trail system on the property during and
after construction. Because of safety issues, portions of the trail
passing closest to the Pisgah House site will be redirected before
construction begins. The trail system will continue to provide access to
W.T. Weaver Boulevard. To see a trail system map, go to
www.unca.edu/news/pisgah_trail_map.html.
Construction
Details: The Hendersonville-based firm Ken Gaylord Architects/Black
Hawk Construction has oversight of the Pisgah House project.
Construction crews will typically be on site Mondays through Fridays,
although as with any construction project, there will be occasions when
Saturday work is required. Construction hours are expected to be 7 a.m.
to 5 p.m., but may on occasion extend to 7 p.m. All operations will
fully comply with the City of Asheville Noise Ordinance (Article IV,
Section 10-84.11). The project will also fully comply with erosion and
sedimentation control site requirements of the N.C. Department of
Environmental and Natural Resources’ Division of Land Resources. Because
Pisgah House is being built on state-owned land, the North Carolina
State Construction Office and the North Carolina Department of Insurance
have jurisdiction over construction inspections.

progress on the access road and site preparation. The truck pictured in

the building's foundation. The intersection of W.T. Weaver Blvd. and
Broadway is at lower left. For a better sense of location and
