North Carolina Center for Health & Wellness

The North Carolina Center for Health & Wellness will be a unique academic and outreach initiative built around UNC Asheville's new major in health and wellness promotion. Programs will focus on regional problems, including childhood obesity, workplace wellness and senior wellness.

This 100,000-square-foot facility received $35 million in state funding from the 2004 North Carolina General Assembly. Some portions of the center will be built with private funds.

In November 2005, Asheville businessman Joe Kimmel made the first major private gift to the Center. Kimmel’s $2 million gift is the first of $5-$7 million that UNC Asheville is raising in private support to outfit the multipurpose convocation center so it can also be used as a venue for the University’s intercollegiate basketball teams and for student health and recreational programs. To honor Kimmel’s long-time interest in and support of the University, the UNC Asheville Board of Trustees voted to name the multipurpose convocation center the Kimmel Arena.

The center is expected to open in 2011.
