Public Computers for UNCA Students

Computer Labs

The hours and equipment vary according to lab location. We have labs located in several major classroom buildings as well as five dorms. The dorm labs are for use by residential students only.

Software availability varies according to location. Please refer to information about specific labs for a list of software availability at each location. ITS supplies word processing, spreadsheet, and database packages in all the labs. "Courseware" and other specialized software required or requested by academic departments must be supplied, with proof of ownership, by the "requesting" department. Before making any software purchases intended for lab installations, please contact one of the following:

Mac software: Michael Conley
Windows software: Noland Wiggins
Lab questions: Jack Stephens

Smart Classrooms

The Smart Classrooms on campus are each equipped with either a PC or Macintosh computer; a data projector to display the computer desktop on a large screen; and a high speed internet connection. With this setup an instructor can display graphic images, documents, web pages and powerpoint presentations. The Smart Classroom setup can also playback music CDs and video DVDs. Most of the PC equipped classrooms can also play VHS video tapes.

Each Smart Classroom also has a switch box and cables to connect your own laptop to the data projector.

How to use a Smart Classroom:

Data Projector

Point the remote at the lens of the data projector and press the On button. Press the On or Off button *twice* to turn off the data projector.

Getting Files to the Smart Classroom

Both the PC and MAC computers are set up with zip drives and CD/DVD combo drives. In addition the PC classrooms have 3 1/4 inch floppy disk drives. You can carry your files to the Smart Classrooms in one of the above formats. A final option is the UNITY server. With the highspeed network connection, files can be stored on UNITY and accessed from the Smart Classroom. Two things should be remembered about UNITY:
1. The UNITY files are not backed up, so don’t put your only copy of a file there.
2. The UNITY computer is very public, so don’t put any sensitive information there.
For more on using the UNITY server contact the ITS Helpdesk.

Laptop Computers

A laptop computer can be connected to the data projector. Follow these steps:
1. Turn on the data projector.
2. Locate the laptop cable in the front of the table and connect it to the laptop VGA connector (usually
on the back of the laptop).
3. Locate the switchbox underneath the table, near the computer. Turn the switch to the “Laptop”
setting.
4. Press the key combination that switches the laptop video to the data projector. You may need to press the key combination several times. Frequently, the key combination will be one of the
following: FN F8 FN F7 FN F3
5. Important: When you disconnect the laptop, but sure to change the switch beneath the table back to the “Desktop Computer” setting.

Additional Power

There is additional power beneath the front edge of the table.
