Welcome to the UNC-Asheville Department of Classics website.

The Department of Classics offers BA degrees in Latin, Greek, and Classical Civilization as well as teacher licensure in Latin, with additional course offerings in Hebrew language and literature, and Greek, Etruscan and Italian art and archaeology. We offer our students the advantages of a private Liberal Arts setting in the public sphere, offering individualized attention, a rigorous curriculum, local Latin teaching internships, opportunities for study abroad, an active and collaborative program of undergraduate research, and a committed faculty actively engaged in outreach, teaching and research. Extracurricular opportunities include our Eta Tau Chapter of Eta Sigma Phi, The Classical Society, and The Ancient Gardens Club. We welcome inquiries and visits from high school students and others who are seeking a quality education. Please contact us for more information.

The 88th Anniversary Meeting of the CAMWS Southern Section is coming to UNC-Asheville November 13-15, 2008! To find out more about the Southern Section meeting in Asheville, click on the following URL for the Call for Papers http://www.camws.org/southernsection/meeting2008/index.htm

Dr. Dorothy Rohner and Dr. Laurel Taylor are at Palazzaccio, Italy this summer along with a number of students who are learning how to do archaeological field work at an ancient site.

Photos from last season's dig taken by Suzzy Sams, the slide librarian in the Art Dept. and dig chronicler, are available at: http://www.unca.edu/classics/Trip2007_.pdf. Dr. Taylor is teaching the Field School course in Classical Archaeology at Palazzaccio. Dr. Rohner is a ceramics specialist and will be working on the pottery excavated from the site, as well as working with the students on the dig.
