Sollod Lectures
Annual lectures endowed by Dr. Norman Sollod in memory of his wife Phyllis Freed
Sollod began in 1990, with Aviva Cantor's lecture on "The Feminization of Jewish
Patriarchy," and have continued to bring memorable speakers to the UNCA community
and the public.
Holocaust Education
Since 1982 the Center has conducted frequent Holocaust workshops
for middle school and high school teachers. These programs,
unique in the Western Carolina area, have proven extraordinarily
popular. Scholarships have been given to educators to attend the
Facing History and Ourselves
seminar in Boston, a weeklong study of the Holocaust and other
issues related to racism. In Fall, 1993, the Center arranged a trip to Washington,
primarily for UNCA students, to visit the
U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.
This program had a major impact and will be repeated.
Other Programs
The Center has sponsored or helped to underwrite performances of a
Shayna Maidel at Theatre UNCA, the
Brave Old World klezmer band at Pack Place,
Shabbat meals for students in board members' homes, and many other activities
which have served the Jewish community or Jewish students or informed the larger
community of Jewish history and interests.
Oral History
The Center is undertaking an oral history of the Jewish community in Western
North Carolina. This will be an important historical record and lay the
groundwork for future historical and ethno-graphic studies.
