Reading of Names of Holocaust Victims

Holocaust Education Days are April 1 and 2 from 8:30am and ending at 5:00 pm, we will read names of Holocaust victims.

We will not be reading names of all twelve million victims (half of whom were Jewish). Only a small portion of victims are known by name. One day is not sufficient to read even this small portion. At one name per second, 24 hours a day, it would take five months to read twelve million names.

Student groups, individual students, faculty, administrators and community members will read names on the main quad of UNC-Asheville at the steps of Ramsey Library.

Questions

What if I can't pronounce a name? The important thing is to try. The goal of this reading is not to get everyone's name just right, but to do what we can to remember those murdered in this atrocity.

What should I expect when I arrive at Ramsey steps? There will be a podium and chairs. Readers take turns every ten to fifteen minutes - less if there are many readers that hour.

Should I wear anything special? Whatever you would normally wear that day would be fine.
