Resources available in the UNCA Chemistry Department

UNCA's Chemistry Department is located in the Rhoades-Robinson Science complex. This facility was completed in 1988 and houses all eight of the university's science departments. Many of Chemistry's laboratories are newly renovated and all were designed to provide for close, personal interactions between students and their professors. Although interaction is inevitable, each student has his or her own individual space to conduct undergraduate research.

Gas chromatograph

High-field NMR

UNCA's Chemistry laboratories contain state of the art equipment that is completely integrated into both the teaching courses and research. Students are not simply exposed to the various techniques that are available from this instrumentation, they are expected to operate it.
By the time a chemistry major graduates they will have learned to operate and become proficient in the use of the department's instrumentation, including the Gemini 2000 high field NMR, Shimadzu 5000 GC/MS, infrared spectrometers, an HPLC, chromatotrons, and atomic absorption spectrometers.

GC-MS

X-ray powder diffraction

Access to and use of more highly specialized instrumentation, such as the x-ray diffractometer, or work with gas-phase photolysis or Mossbauer equipment, is also possible should a student choose to focus their studies in a more specific area.
