The Ruth Feldman Outstanding Scholar Award is a stipend, funded by an endowment, given each year to a student selected by faculty in the History Department as an outstanding scholar at UNCA.
The Allene and William E. Highsmith Distinguished Visiting Scholar Fund was established by the faculty in 1984 to enable friends and associates to honor Chancellor and Mrs. Highsmith on the occasion of the Chancellor's retirement after 22 years of service to the institution. The Highsmith Fund brings persons of broad interest and distinguished achievement to the University for residencies during which they interact vigorously with the campus community. Dr. Rodrigo Borja, president of Ecuador from 1988 to 1992, held the Visiting Scholar post in 1993 and 1994.
The Carol Belk Distinguished Professorship in the Humanities was established through a challenge grant from the North Carolina General Assembly and a donation from Irwin Belk, member of a leading North Carolina business family and a supporter of higher education in the Southeast. A distinguished teacher-scholar with a demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching in the humanities is named to the spring-semester professorship and serves as a mentor for faculty participating in the university's Humanities Program.
