Library Research (LR)

Associate Professor Kuhlman (Chair); Assistant Professor Sinclair (Coordinator); Associate Professors Bland, Greene, White-Carter; Assistant Professors Marsh, Stoffan, Wykle; Lecturer Tate

This program introduces students to library resources and research tools and efficient strategies for retrieving information. LR 101 or LR 102 is a pre- or corequisite for LANG 102 and a prerequisite for declaring a major. Students who have satisfied the Bibliography requirement by taking BIB 101 or the competency examination which earned no credit hours may not take LR 101 or 102 for credit.

101 Library Research (1)
Introduction to library resources and research tools in a classroom, learning laboratory and library environment. Students demonstrate knowledge and research strategies through exams and laboratory experience in retrieving and evaluating information. (Students may not receive credit for both LR 101 and 102.)

102 Library Research (1)
While the content and objectives are similar to LR 101, learning is achieved by self-guided study and learning laboratory exercises and measured by a competency exam rather than by the typical classroom format. Students are required to attend the first class for preparation guidelines and at least one hands-on laboratory session in the library. Text materials, exercises involving library use and the understanding of key concepts, and one-on-one consultation with librarians provide the primary means of learning. Grading is S/U. (Students may not receive credit for both LR 101 and 102.)
