Pakistani singer-songwriter and peace activist Arooj Aftab will perform at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27 in Lipinsky Auditorium. Named one of NPR’s top 100 composers under 40, Aftab is the co-founder of the peace initiative “Rebuild Pakistan,” and is part of the creative crew of the new MTV series, Rebel Music.
Aftab’s innovative music draws from classical Pakistani, Sufi and pre-partition South Asian music. Originally from Lahore, Pakistan, Aftab initially gained recognition as one of the few female guitarists in Pakistan. Along with her work in “Rebuild Pakistan,” a collaboration with the Human Development Foundation, Aftab serves as assistant editor and music supervisor for MTV’s Rebel Music, which follows young musicians in countries experiencing political and social struggle.
