Message to
Prospective Biology Majors

We are happy to provide an on-line source of
information about the Biology Department at The
University of North Carolina at Asheville. This reference
material includes pertinent facts concerning the courses
required for the major (B.S.), faculty specialties, the biology
club, career options, and available research
opportunities.
You are to be commended for selecting a program of
study that will demand the very best from you. Faculty
members in the Biology Department have made impressive
contributions to UNCA through their educational
innovations, publications, and grant-earning records.
Scholars in the department are recognized far beyond this
campus. Within the context of UNCA's primary mission, which is to
offer an undergraduate liberal arts education of superior
quality for serious and able students, the biology faculty strive to involve
students in research and learning activities.
The
principal difference between our faculty and the faculty
at larger universities is the emphasis on undergraduate
education. This means that you can expect us to be
interested in what you're doing and where you're going
academically. In turn, we will expect much of you. In
this department, we want you to get the most from your education and to realize your potential as a student and an
individual.
One of the goals of the biology curriculum is to
insure breadth to each major's academic experience. The
faculty believe that a biology major should have
knowledge of more than a single subdiscipline and be equally at
home in the field as well as in the laboratory.
Therefore, your major has requirements that allow you to
experience biology in its myriad aspects.
While most of our graduates secure careers
in fields related to biology, there are no guarantees
that every individual will be able to do so. If you
wish to pursue a career in biology, we strongly recommend that you
plan to obtain advanced training in the field of your
choice by attending graduate and professional schools. Such a goal
necessitates that you establish a record of achievement
in undergraduate studies.
If you do not want to pursue graduate studies, we
encourage you to consider your experience here as a time
in your life when you have the chance to study a subject
of intense personal interest. Your UNCA education will
equip you well for a variety of careers, and for life in
general. After you graduate and find employment, you may
never again have the time or opportunity to explore the
wonders of living organisms. Your time as a student is a
special phase in your life, a unique time of learning and
opportunities, and we want you to enjoy and make the most
of your time with us.
Welcome to the Biology Department. We think we are the
best on campus, and we are pleased to have this chance to
prove it to you.
