Dr. Gregg Kormanik,
Professor. Ph.D., University of Miami at Coral
Gables.
Dr. Kormanik spent a two-year
post-doctoral study at the University of Texas Marine
Laboratory in Port Aransas. He was trained as a
zoologist, and specializes in the comparative physiology
of acid-base balance, ion regulation and respiration in
fishes, especially the elasmobranchs. Currently he is
studying the physiology of maternal-fetal relations in
sharks and skates. The evolution of viviparity in the
elasmobranchs has provided a wealth of study materials
for the investigation of the transfer of nutrients,
respiratory gases and ion regulation, and the role the
mother plays in support of the developing embryo. During
the summer his research takes him to the Mount
Desert Island Biological
Laboratory in Maine where
he performs studies on the elasmobranchs. He has had
several research grants from the National Science
Foundation.
