Dr. Jonathan Horton,
Assistant Professor.
Ph.D., Northern Arizona University.
Dr. Horton's research focuses on plant
physiological ecology, especially the response of
plants to abiotic and biotic stressors. His
research has taken him from the southern
Appalachian Mountains to the Sonoran Desert and
back again. Most recently, Dr. Horton has been
collaborating with scientists from Virginia Tech
and the U.S. Forest Service investigating the
mechanisms by which evergreen understory shrubs
inhibit tree regeneration, including both above-
and belowground resource limitation. This research
has included molecular identification of
mycorrhizal colonists on oak seedlings. Future
research plans include investigations of
characteristics that make invasive species
successful and the interplay between mycorrhizae
and their plant symbionts.
