1984 

  • Dr. Doug Huntley is a surgeon in Hendersonville.  A recent article in the Asheville Citizen-Times featured Dr. Huntley and his work at the Curative Wound Center in Arden.  The center specializes in new procedures for treating wounds that won't heal.

1990

  • Manning McGraw graduated in May with a Masters from Western Carolina in Physical Therapy

1993

  • Marietta Wright was accepted into the graduate program at West Virginia University and offered a teaching assistantship.

1994

  • Amanda Vermillion moved back to the Asheville area and opened a coffeehouse called The Dripolator in Black Mountain.

1995

  • Carolyn Wells published a manuscript with Irene Rossell in the most recent issue of the journal Wetlands, "The seed banks of a southern Appalachian fen and an adjacent degraded wetland," Wetlands volume 19 no. 2, June 1999, pp. 365-367.  She will finish this year at UT with a Masters in Botany.  This spring she submitted a manuscript for publication reviewing patterns of adaptive growth strategies in aquatic plants.  After graduation, she intends to continue her interests in plant community ecology and natural history by searching out research opportunities at regional field stations and/or governmental agencies.

1996

  • Carol Benjamin graduated in August with a Masters in Physical Therapy.  When she takes and passes her licensing exam, she will be a Physical Therapist.  She may work temporarily with a camp in Celo, NC, her former home.
  • Andrew Bundy was accepted to Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk.
  • John Furmage accepted a position at the Clinical Laboratory Science program in Chapel Hill.
  • Radiance Hartman started her first rotation in internal medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.  After two months there, she will return to Chapel Hill for one month on the infectious disease ward.  She's keeping her options open before deciding on a career.  More exciting news about Radiance:  she married Shahin Vafai on September 19 in Columbia, SC.

1997

  • Joyce Cacka was awarded a full first-year fellowship at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.  She will receive a Masters in Ecology, emphasizing wildlife biology.
  • Karen Engelke is starting a midwifery program in El Paso in September, 1999.
  • Mary Everhart is in graduate school at Wake Forest University.  She is a TA for Cell and Molecular Bio labs and will be working on a research project studying the kinetics of the cellular response to primary subcutaneous and intraperitoneal infections with certain strains of Taenia.
  • Pam Gutbier is a second year medical student and teaching assistant in the MED program at Chapel Hill.
  • Jill Hunter is enjoying her training in midwifery at the School of Nursing at UNC Greensboro.  This is her last year of nursing school and plans to graduate in May.  She may return to Asheville to look for a job.
  • Teresa Ann LaPrade completed Phlebotomy training and certification at Intramed Institute and works at Mid-Carolina OB-GYN at Rex Hospital Family Birth Center in Raleigh.  She hopes to complete her Medical Assistant certification this year.
  • Andrea Rushlow translates tech/scientific data over the world wide web.  This has allowed Andrea and husband Lee to travel more.
  • Adam Stein is a resident naturalist at Ecolodge San Cuis in the Costa Rican Cloud forest and at San Miguel Biological Station on the Pacific Coast of the Nicoya Peninsula.  He is studying under two professors from UGA and is learning about tropical biology, conservation, reforestation, and marine ecology.

1998

  • Jason Colinger has been accepted to Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine in Pikeville, KY for the Fall of 1999.
  • Michael Creel is a Radiation Safety Specialist at Duke University Medical Center. He is currently working in the healthcare field while applying to medical school.
  • Cary Gay has been accepted to the University of Tennessee for Microbiology as a Graduate Teaching Assistant.
  • Ian Hines is continuing his research and working on his Ph.D. in Physiology at LSU in Shreveport, LA.
  • Crystal Lawrence married Marty Smith of Lexington April 10, 1999 at the Cathedral of All Souls in Asheville.  Crystal is employed at Botanical Interiors in Asheville.  Marty, who graduated from UNCA in 1996 with a degree in Civil Engineering, is employed at Alpha Environmental in Waynesville.
  • Cecil Brian Moore is a dental student at UNC School of Medicine.
  • Rebecca Jo Vonderhaar married Shawn Glenn Gallaher May 30, 1998. Rebecca competes in marathons in San Diego.

1999

  • Sarah Cooke spent a month in Puerto Rico this summer researching sea turtles.
  • Emily Gillespie spent part of the summer in Costa Rica researching howler monkeys.
  • Ashley Hart published a paper, "Advances in Occupational Ergonomics and Safety," in IOS Press, Amsterdam, pp. 283-288.  Ashley was also inducted into Sigma XI this year.
  • Robbie Southern received a research grant, "Location of Firefly Hosts by Phorid Parasitoids, " funded by the UNCA Undergraduate Research Program.
