New free BARCS Shuttle!
The new FREE BARCS (Bulldog Area Commuter Shuttle) will be for students, staff, faculty, Reuters Center members, and any visitor on campus. The shuttle would pick up and drop off at all (or most) parking lots, buildings, and places of interest on campus. In addition, the BARCS would help reduce demand for commuter student parking on campus by providing free transportation between the university and local apartment complexes including: the Grove Apartments, Mountain Trace Apartments, Pinnacle Ridge Apartments, and University Place Apartments. In addition, BARCS will allow community members to transfer from Asheville Transit Route 2 (Merrimon South bound) and 11 (Montford) to get to campus."
Day parking permits will provide a low-cost parking option for those who do not need a year-long permit. This day parking permit option complements the alternative transportation programs (carpooling, transit, shuttles, biking, and walking). For days when patrons can't use alternative modes of transportation to get to campus, a day parking permit would give people the option to park on campus for a single day.
Reasons for increasing access to alternative transportation on campus?
The renovation of Rhoades Hall could decrease parking spaces. Also construction of NC Center for Health and Wellness may result in loss of 200 parking spaces.
So it is imperative that the Transportation Office offset this loss with programs to make getting to campus as easy as possible.
The shuttle will operate from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. |
