Asheville Named a National Innovator by U.S. News & World
Report; "Road Trip" Feature Story Highlights Faculty,
Undergraduate Research:
U.S. News &
World Report
has awarded high marks to UNC Asheville for its innovations,
undergraduate research, and affordability in the new edition of
America's Best Colleges. UNC Asheville also had the honor of
being one of just 24 colleges in the nation to be profiled in
the guide's "Road Trips" section.

UNC Asheville Earns Top Spot in
Fiske Guide to Colleges; University Named Best Buy for 15
Consecutive Years: UNC Asheville continues to stand
with some of the nation's finest colleges in popular college
rankings. The annual Fiske Guide to Colleges released its
2009 list of Best Buys of American and Canadian colleges earlier
this summer. It is the 15th consecutive year that UNC Asheville
has been named a Best Buy.

Asheville's Brent Skidmore Exhibits Work at Mint Museum; Artist
Featured Among "Rising Stars of Contemporary Craft in North
Carolina:"
UNC
Asheville Craft Campus Director and noted artist Brent Skidmore
was recently selected to exhibit new works at the Mint Museum of
Craft & Design in Charlotte. The exhibition, "Possibilities:
Rising Stars of Contemporary Craft in North Carolina," features
work by six craft artists chosen for the quality and complexity
of their work. The exhibition is on view through November 30.

UNC Asheville Faculty Promoted, New
Chairs Named: Several UNC Asheville faculty members
recently received promotions. Promoted to full professor were
Gwen Ashburn, literature and language; Robert Dunning, art;
Claudel McKenzie, management and accountancy; and Dave Peifer,
mathematics. Promoted to associate professor were Joseph
Berryhill, psychology; Nancy Ruppert, education; and Lorraine
Walsh, multimedia arts and sciences.

Steep Canyon Rangers have been nominated for two
International Bluegrass Music Awards: Album of the Year (”Lovin’
Pretty Women”) and Gospel Performance of the Year (”Be Still
Moses”).

1992) recently joined Oklahoma City television station
KOCO-5 as a news anchor. Previously, Folger worked as a
weekday morning and news anchor for WTEV in Jacksonville, Fla.

Asheville Hosts Aboriginal Storytellers on September 19:
UNC
Asheville's Distinguished Speaker Series will present "The Land
of the Lightning Brothers," an evening of authentic Aboriginal
storytelling, rock art, native percussion and didjeridoo music
at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19. The program will feature Aboriginal
Tribal Elder Yidumdama Bill Harney, of the Wardaman tribe, with
storyteller, musician and honorary tribal member Paul "Walking
Stick" Taylor.

UNC Asheville Hosts Chinese
Contemporary Design Exhibition: "Designed in China:
Contemporary Design from Shenzhen University," featuring more
than 70 pieces by some 100 Shenzhen University students, will be
on view September 16-October 28 at UNC Asheville's Highsmith
University Union Gallery. The exhibit will highlight recent
works, which fuse contemporary design, influences of Chinese
culture and current science and technology. An opening reception
and gallery talk will be held 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, in the
gallery.

UNC Asheville's Great Smokies Writing
Program Offers Fall Workshops: Local writers will
have the opportunity to hone their skills with the Great Smokies
Writing Program's fall workshop series of eight courses in
poetry and prose. The classes, held at varying locations in
Asheville, are open to writers of varying levels. Students will
earn UNC Asheville credit hours in Literature and Language.
