UNC Asheville Students Team Up with Appalachian Offsets, Asheville Housing Authority for Massive Work Day September 11:   UNC Asheville freshmen are trading in their back-to-school fashions for coordinating tan t-shirts and work gloves. This shift in fashion is sparked by the University's 11th annual community service day set for Tuesday, Sept. 11. Some 650 students, faculty and staff will partner with the Housing Authority of the City of Asheville and Appalachian Offsets to install energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs in the homes of Housing Authority residents, among other service activities. Students are expected to replace some 5,000 bulbs. MORE>>

UNC Asheville Draws Praise as a National Best Buy; University Named in "Fiske Guide to Colleges," Princeton Review's "The Best 366 Colleges":
 Parents and students are facing the daunting possibility of astronomical costs and years of debt as they shop for colleges this fall. With that in mind, "The Fiske Guide to Colleges," has released its 2008 list of Best Buys among American and Canadian colleges. UNC Asheville is alone among public colleges in Western North Carolina to earn a spot on the list. It is the 14th consecutive year that UNC Asheville has been named a Best Buy. MORE>>

UNC Asheville Management Students Rank Fifth in National Business Simulation:
UNC Asheville students dominated the national microsensor market in May—at least virtually. Four graduating seniors from UNC Asheville’s Management and Accountancy Department earned a simulated $690 million dollars in one semester, simply by playing a "serious" computer game. Through this experience, UNC Asheville players acquired knowledge about important business processes and placed fifth in the nation in overall profits. MORE>>

UNC Asheville Welcomes Some 600 New Freshmen:
 UNC Asheville welcomed some 600 freshmen to campus in August.  UNC Asheville alumni, faculty and staff continued the University's 15-year tradition, unique among college campuses, of helping students and their parents with the move. MORE>>

New Account CPE Program Announced: 
The Department of Management and Accountancy is pleased to announce its new Accounting CPE program for Fall 2007.  The next course will be on Nov. 10, 8:30-12:30 p.m.(New Date: November 9, 8:30-12:30) and will consist of four sessions on fraud.  For more information contact Dan Hinchliffe by email at dhinchli@unca.edu or phone at 828/251.6856.

Annual Fund News

Giving to UNC Asheville: Although state support for higher education remains strong in North Carolina, state dollars account for only 42 percent of the University’s budget. Cinema Legend John Waters to Speak at UNC Asheville September 19; Waters' Films Screened September 12-18:
John Waters, the man who perfected cinematic camp, will discuss his work and wild approach to creativity at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium. The filmmaking legend launches UNC Asheville's 2007-08 Distinguished Speakers Series. MORE>>

UNC Asheville's Super Saturday Program Offers Super Classes for Kids:
  Kids can super-size their Saturdays at UNC Asheville this fall! Gifted, imaginative and motivated third through eighth graders have an opportunity to explore biology, acting, cartooning, cheese and much more at UNC Asheville's 22nd annual Super Saturday program beginning October 13. This program has helped more than 12,000 children from across Western North Carolina explore their special interests through hands-on learning on the UNC Asheville campus. MORE>>
