University News

UNC Asheville Dedicates New, "Green" Facilities Management Complex; Bond Project is First University Building Named in Honor of an Employee:  Ireland native Sam Millar brought his Celtic charm to UNC Asheville in 1971, and the campus hasn't been the same since. Millar, who died in 1998, served as University Engineer for 15 years overseeing all of the campus facilities. When not spearheading institutional improvements, Millar was busy founding and coaching the University's first intercollegiate men's soccer team. On Thursday, Sept. 20, UNC Asheville formally dedicated the new Facilities Management Complex in his honor. It is the first campus building named for an employee. MORE>>

UNC Asheville Program Joins International Forum on Aging; Six Countries Sharing Issues, Solutions for Older Citizens:
The North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement, a nationally recognized thought leader in lifelong learning and retirement planning based at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, is one of just six programs and the only U.S. group selected to participate in the International Forum on Promotion and Practice of Elder Education to be held in Taipei, Taiwan on October 20-21. New Members Appointed to UNC Asheville Board of Trustees:
 Four new members were recently appointed to the UNC Asheville Board of Trustees. These include Dr. M. David Cogburn (’77), Audrey Byrd Mosley (’75), Virgil Smith and Tristyn LeVon Card (’08). MORE>>

Alumni Info

UNC Asheville License Plates: 
The Alumni Office, in partnership with NC DMV, is pleased to offer the official UNC Asheville North Carolina license plate. The cost is just $25 per year (in addition to the regular plate fees). A personalized option is also available. Fifteen dollars of the fee is returned to UNC Asheville annually to support alumni programs. Be one of the first people to have the new plate! The Alumni Office must collect the fee for the first 300 applications before the DMV will print the plates.  For more information go to the online application.

Alumni Office Partners with Bank of America: The Alumni Office is pleased to announce its partnership with Bank of America for affinity credit card services. Through this partnership, alumni and friends can apply for a special co-branded WorldPoints MasterCard from Bank of America. A percentage of the dollars spent on these cards are returned to the Alumni Office to support alumni programming. For more information, and to apply online, check out the website.

Basketball Season Tickets Now on Sale: Reserve your season tickets for Bulldog Basketball. Prices are $100 for men's reserved season tickets and $45 for women's season tickets.  Call Adam Hubbard at 828/251-6904.  Both teams start the season with an exhibition game against Mars Hill on Nov. 1: women at 6 p.m. and men at 8 p.m.

Looking for a Great Person to Fill a Job?  Be Sure to Register for the Fall Career and Graduate School Fair:  This year’s fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 23, in Alumni Hall (Highsmith Union). Go to the Career Fair Homepage for registration information. The deadline is Oct. 5, 2007.

Looking for Great Job or Planning to Go to Grad School? Make Plans to Attend this year’s Career and Graduate School Fair from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 23, in Alumni Hall (Highsmith Union).  No registration is required. Interview attire highly recommended. Check the Career Center Website throughout October for an updated list of employers.

Fall Fundraising Campaign Begins:  Over the next few weeks you will be contacted asking for support of UNC Asheville. Your financial investment in the University helps your Alma Mater continue to offer one of the nation’s leading liberal arts educations. Although state support for higher education remains strong in North Carolina, state dollars account for only 42 percent of the University’s budget, and tuition only 19 percent. The difference is made up through the through the generous support and investment of alumni and friends. UNC Asheville to Host talk on African American Spirituals:
UNC Asheville will host a talk on "Gifts from My Ancestors" by Calvin Earl, a noted African American spirituals performer and educator, at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, in UNC Asheville's Humanities Lecture Hall. In his presentation, Earl will describe how African people enslaved in America created original music that enabled them to secretly communicate with each other, teach their young and record their history. “Women’s Work” Photography Exhibition on View at UNC Asheville:
 “Women’s Work,” an exhibition featuring 30 color photographs by UNC Asheville senior Carolyn Fryberger, will be on display October 2-31 at UNC Asheville’s Ramsey Library Third Floor Gallery. A reception will be held from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, in the gallery. An artist talk will be given at 4:30 p.m. MORE>>

UNC Asheville's Super Saturday Program Offers Super Classes for Kids:
Kids can super-size their Saturdays at UNC Asheville this fall! Gifted, imaginative and motivated third-eighth graders have an opportunity to explore biology, acting, cartooning, cheese and much more at UNC Asheville's 22nd annual Super Saturday program beginning October 13. This program has helped more than 12,000 children from across Western North Carolina explore their special interests through hands-on learning on the UNC Asheville campus. MORE>>
