The Cliffs Communities Inc. Gifts $1 Million to UNC Asheville to
Benefit the North Carolina Center for Health & Wellness:
The
University of North Carolina Asheville and The Cliffs
Communities announced that The Cliffs is gifting $1 million to
the University’s North Carolina Center for Health & Wellness.
The Center will be a hub for educating health and wellness
professionals, conducting interdisciplinary research, building
community and statewide partnerships, and incubating community
programs around critical health-and-wellness issues.

Endowed Economics Professorship Funded by C.D. Spangler
Foundation: Cary C. Owen is known
throughout the state as a remarkable champion for public
education. Starting as a member of the Buncombe County Board of
Education and the first woman elected to the Buncombe County
Commissioners, she went on to lend her skills to the UNC
Asheville Board of Trustees, the State Board of Education, and
the University of North Carolina Board of Governors.

Farmland Values
Project Explores Non-farm Values of Agricultural Land in
Buncombe, Haywood, Henderson and Madison Counties:
Many people move to Western North Carolina
seeking a sense of community and access to rural landscapes.
However, some newcomers realize that their arrival has
contributed to significant changes in the very kind of landscape
they desire. Local farmers, aware of these changes, believe that
community is being lost as farmland is converted to other uses.

Donates Urban Renewal Files to UNC Asheville; Documents Record
Dramatic Changes in Historic African American Neighborhoods: When
UNC Asheville junior Reed Fornoff started his internship at
Mountain Housing Opportunities, he was hoping for a job that
that would match his interest in urban planning. Little did he
know that his first task for the organization, a local nonprofit
which provides affordable housing to low-income residents, would
become an intriguing exploration into Asheville's past.

Spells, has been tapped as a Book Sense Book of the
Month as well as a Barnes & Noble featured title. An excerpt of
the book just ran the September issue of Readers Digest and

Noted
Scientist and Inventor Alumnus Dies: Mark
Lewis Naiman, a graduate of the class of 1941, passed away
August 1. Naiman, 85, achieved many notable accomplishments in
life, including serving on the Manhattan Project in New York and
inventing “sudden steam printing,” a process which eventually
became ink jet printing. He is survived by his wife, Adeline;
three sons Joris, Alaric and Kieron; and siblings Richard and
Elaine Taibi (’48).

Fair for All Ages:
The North
Carolina Center for Creative Retirement and UNC Asheville's
Health & Wellness Promotions Department will host a wellness
fair for all ages from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, in UNC
Asheville's Reuter Center. The "Live Well" fair is held in
conjunction with the Center's yearlong 20th anniversary
celebration. The event is free and open to the public.

TheatreUNCA Stages
Premiere Production of "Thousand Kites" November 14-18; Project
Explores the Impact of Prisons in Rural Appalachia:
In prison slang, to "shoot a kite" means to send a
message. And the new stage production "Thousand Kites" does just
that. TheatreUNCA will be the first in the nation to stage a
full production of "Thousand Kites," an innovative recent work
by Appalshop and Roadside Theatre, which explores the issues
surrounding America's prison systems. "Thousand Kites" will
debut November 14-18 in UNC Asheville's Carol Belk Theatre.
Curtain is 8 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday with a 2 p.m.
Sunday matinee. All shows are open to the public.
