The Old
North State: North Carolina Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow
Indulge in an Intellectual Retreat in Cool,
Green Asheville – Alumni Summer Institute 2007 (June 22-23, 2007):
Start the summer off right with fellow alumni, classmates and friends at
a weekend experience on the UNC Asheville campus. Spend two nights on
campus or commute, if you live nearby. Our goal is to combine a rich
intellectual experience anchored in UNC Asheville’s liberal arts
tradition, time for informal conversation with faculty members, and an
opportunity to catch up with old friends and build professional
relationships. Spouses, partners, and friends are welcome. Think of
it as an intellectual vacation!
Topics this year include The Old North State, An Historical Perspective;
Addressing Slavery and Jim Crow in 2007; History of NASCAR; The Story of
Moonshine; The North Carolina Legislative Agenda; Growth of North
Carolina's Hispanic Community
“Interesting reading, stimulating discussions and a congenial group
of people—the institute was a wonderful way to spend a weekend.
We can’t wait for the next one! ” —Jasmin Gentling ’99 (MLA)
