Regional Math Literacy Summit Feb. 27-28; Noted
Civil Rights Leader, MacArthur Fellow Robert Moses
to Speak:
A
two-day summit on the importance of Math Literacy
will be presented by Mission Health & Hospitals and
UNC Asheville Wednesday, Feb. 27, and Thursday, Feb.
28. Both the Department of Mathematics and
Multicultural Student Programs are involved.
Educators, community leaders, and professionals
working with children of all ages are encouraged to
attend.

N.C. Center for Health & Wellness:
Recently, HomeTrust Bank presented a $25,000 gift
toward construction of UNC Asheville's North
Carolina Center for Health & Wellness.

Mark
Gibney Named Visiting Distinguished Professor at
English University; Human Rights Scholar Will Also
Present Research in Netherlands:
Mark Gibney, UNC Asheville Belk Professor
of Humanities, was recently named Visiting
Distinguished Professor in the Faculty of Law at
Lancaster University in Lancaster, England. Gibney
will remain a full-time faculty member at UNC
Asheville and will travel to Lancaster University to
deliver a lecture once a year and to collaborate
with faculty.

Do you have personal or professional contacts in
Chicago that could be helpful to UNC Asheville
students interested in working in the Windy City?
This March, the Career Center, in partnership with
the Alumni Office, is taking a group of
extraordinary students on the third annual World of
Work Trip to Chicago. The purpose of the World of
Work Trip is for students to get a first-hand look
at career areas they are interested in pursuing for
their own life’s work. During the trip, students
meet with alumni, as well as friends and colleagues
of alumni, to learn about their career fields.
Please take a look at the career interests list of
our students and let us know if you have any great
contacts in Chicago.

Men's Basketball Picks Up a Vote in AP Top 25 Poll:
In a year of firsts, the UNC Asheville men’s
basketball team achieved another first on Monday.
The Bulldogs received a vote in the AP Top 25
College Basketball Poll that was released on
February 4. Monday afternoon.

Variety of Programs:
UNC Asheville will celebrate Black History Month
throughout February with a host of special events.
Among the highlights will be a lecture by Civil
Rights leader and MacArthur Fellow Robert P. Moses
and a performance by the Kenyan band Jabali Afrika.

Asheville Hosts Contemporary Photography Exhibition
by Yale University Alumni:
UNC Asheville's S. Tucker Cooke Gallery will pay
homage to another great university with a
contemporary photography exhibition by Yale
University alumni Pamela Pecchio, Mike Smith and
Jeff Whetsone February 8-March 4. Whetstone will
kick off the exhibition with a gallery talk at 7
p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, in the gallery, which is
located on the first floor of UNC Asheville's Owen
Hall. An opening reception with the artists will be
held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, in the
gallery. All events are free and open to the public.

Asheville’s Super Saturday Program Offers Awesome
Kids’ Classes: Gifted,
creative and motivated 3rd-8th graders can
super-size their Saturday mornings at UNC Asheville
this spring. The University’s 21st annual six-week
Super Saturday Program begins March 1 and offers a
host of classes, from physics to improve theater.
The popular program has helped more than 13,000
children from across Western North Carolina explore
their special interests through hands-on learning on
the UNC Asheville campus.
