UNC Asheville Named a Top Value by Consumers Digest Magazine:  UNC Asheville continues to head to the top of the class as an outstanding educational value nationally. The May/June issue of Consumers Digest named UNC Asheville one of the Top 50 Best Values for public colleges and universities. UNC Asheville came in at number 30 out of the top 255 public colleges and universities considered. MORE>>

University of North Carolina Online Puts Degree Programs Within Reach:
 Responding to growing statewide demand for affordable access to quality higher education, the University of North Carolina system has launched the University of North Carolina Online, a central website that provides convenient one-stop access to more than 130 online degree, certificate, and licensure programs offered by the 16 UNC campuses. New Initiative Involving NOAA's National Climatic Data Center Will Help Urban Planners Address Climate Change:
As the global climate heats up in the coming decades, urban planners in particular are going to be in the hot seat as they make decisions about transportation, land use, landscaping, and a host of other critical issues. The available literature for planners about climate change is neither comprehensive nor up to date, and much of it is inaccurate, but that’s going to change as a result of a new initiative in Asheville to develop a practical manual for planners across the United States. UNC Asheville Assists Duke University with NASA-Funded Rainfall Study; Research to Focus on Southern Haywood County:
Doug Miller is waiting for rain. Like most people in Western North Carolina, Miller, an associate professor of atmospheric sciences at UNC Asheville, is worried about dwindling wells and parched lawns. But he has even more at stake. Miller and Ana P. Barros of Duke University’s Pratt School of Engineering are banking on a $689,164 NASA-funded rainfall study on the clouds opening up. The 18-month study, which launches this month, will begin to examine the nature of rainfall in the Western North Carolina mountains. MORE>>

UNC Asheville Professor Gordon Wilson to Lead International Latin Paleography Workshop; Two UNC Asheville Students Selected to Participate in Unique Event:
UNC Asheville Philosophy Professor Gordon A. Wilson was recently selected by Georgetown University's Philosophy Department to lead "The Workshop on Latin Paleography and Critical Editing." The prestigious workshop, which attracts scholars from around the world, was held July 9-August 3 at Georgetown University. MORE>>

UNC Asheville Names Jesse Norman as Head Cross Country & Track and Field Coach: UNC Asheville Athletics Director Janet Cone announced the hiring of former Western Carolina assistant coach Jesse Norman as the Bulldogs new head coach for men's and women's cross country and track and field. He succeeds Dean Duncan who resigned in May. MORE>>

Ty Wigginton Traded to Astros
: Hoping for more offensive production from their infield, the Houston Astros acquired UNC Asheville Alumnus Ty Wigginton from the Tampa Bay Devil Rays on Saturday for relief pitcher Dan Wheeler. MORE>>

Cinema Legend John Waters to Speak at UNC Asheville September 19; Waters' Films Screened September 12-18:
John Waters, the man who perfected cinematic camp, will discuss his work and wild approach to creativity at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at UNC Asheville's Lipinsky Auditorium. The filmmaking legend launches UNC Asheville's 2007-08 Distinguished Speakers Series. MORE>>
