Master of Library and Information Studies
UNC Greensboro

It has been determined that UNC Greensboro will NOT start another Asheville cohort based on limited interest.

The Master of Library and Information Studies degree program of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro is accredited by the American Library Association. Students enrolled in the Asheville program may choose one of three specializations:

  • Academic Librarianship (colleges/universities)
  • Public Librarianship
  • Special Libraries

All core courses are offered via teleconferencing on the UNC Asheville campus. Many electives are offered either on-site with a local instructor, via the internet, or as independent study. A limited number of courses are offered in the Charlotte area and may require you to commute once a week.

All three programs require 36 semester hours of study and a master’s project. Curriculum requirements include an 18-hour block of foundations courses plus an additional 18 hours of course work that is specific to the particular specialization chosen. Students pursuing the school librarianship program must either hold a N.C. teaching licence or take some additional course work in education beyond the 36 hours.

Admission requirements include a completed application form, three letters of recommendation, transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work, and scores from the General Test of the Graduate Record Examination (taken within the past five years). A bachelor’s degree is also required for admission; however, no specific major is designated.

The MLIS degree program in Asheville operates on a cohort model with each group taking their courses together in lock-step fashion.
